Misdiagnosis or Repair Scam..???
First,
newbie here and thank you for any and all replies, good or bad? My vehicle information is 2013 BMW X5 (N55) with 50k miles and currently at an Indy European Facility owned by an BMW Master Tech. The vehicle symptoms are "Cranks but no start" with this one code 02DD6 (Action in service-0X2DD6 Program DME Intergration Level is less than 10-09-511) and the SAE Code-P10E2. 1. The repair shop scanned and said the Servomotor was bad needs replaced, parts and labor $2200.00 estimate, I feel is high for roughly 6hrs of labor? 2. The repair shop called and said the Servomotor didn't fix the problem and some news codes found showing the Eccentric Shaft out or Specs. and needs replaced. Now the estimate is roughly $5000.00 and again, I feel is too high. I asked the service manager about the new codes and requested copies and he agreed to my request. WATCH THIS SPACE: I asked the service manager if knows about the BMW Technical Service Bulletin #SI B11 06 16 Various Eccentric Shaft Sensor faults stored in the DME?.......His reply, "the Master tech should know about that bulletin" 3. The repair shop called after replacing the Eccentric Shaft & Servomotor and the vehicle starts but runs rough and now needs a new DME. Now this is my concern and it is my hope that I am not paying for a misdiagnosis repair scam?? 1. Was the DME faulty and overlooked? 2. Was the Eccentric Shaft & motor replaced for nothing? 3. Will all the scan documents show the truth? Does anyone have a full list or link with the BMW fault codes used in ISTA-D or SAE codes? Let me know if you need more information, Thank you Last edited by Napco; 01-31-2020 at 01:51 PM.. |

Don't think he outright scamming you, as it looks like this problem can be caused by bad servo motor or DME so you naturally start with the cheaper parts first, but he is definitely extremely expensive. For example, the servo motor and eccentric shaft is about 1200 dollars in parts. Let's add a few hundred more just for misc gaskets and round off to 1500 total in parts. So he is charging you 3500 in labor. Even if the repair takes 10 hours, that's 350 an hour in labor......that's assuming that the 5000 is in addition to the 2200 you already spent so 7200 total.
A new DME is pretty expensive, if I were you I would send it in to one of the places that will repair them. It's worth the couple hundred dollar gamble. |

You also may have some luck finding a used DME and having that coded into the car. A friend of mine fried his DME on a 14' 650i and he found a used DME in working condition for like $200-300 or something in that ballpark on eBay and had it coded in for another couple hundred. Either that or as redneck said, send/bring it to a repair shop for them to try to diagnose and fix the issue.

dme is easy to find
car-parts.com is the salvage yard google finder. Also cross reference as dme's are often interchangeable with different vehicles. E70/E90 same engine should be interchangeable. I purchased an e70 35d DDE for me 335D (e90) no problem. |

Run away from that shop, they obliviously don't know what's the problem.
Find specialized Bmw shop for the future services.

I think you can get the dme replaced under the federal emission warranty 8/80k mile warranty so you shouldn't have to pay for it. The repair cost seems a little high for independent shop. I really feel like you would have been able to get the same work done at a dealership and had a piece of mind knowing you had factory trained technician working on your vehicle. Best, Kevin |
