What is this bulb for?

I had a brake lamp out, so I went to autozone and purchased a 2 pack of 7506 bulbs. I looked at the manual and it looked like the brake lamp was the middle socket, so i replaced it. i noticed an identical socket below the middle one and when i looked, it was the same bulb, so i replaced that bulb as well. I think that bulb was the turn signal. My question is, in the manual, and in some videos, it has the very small black socket bulb on the top being replaced as well. That is a small 16W bulb. What is that small bulb for? I didn't replace it and my brake light works fine with me only replacing the middle P21W bulb. So, 1st question is, what does that little 16 Watt bulb do?

2nd question is: i took a look at the passenger side bulbs as well (I purchased two 2-packs of P21W replacement bulbs) and the bulbs that were in the middle and lower white sockets were 1057 bulbs. I've read that 1156 is interchangeable with the 7506, but not 1057. Did someone put the wrong bulb in during a previous replacement? Won't the 1057 cause damage? Anyway, I took them out and replaced them with the 7506/P21W bulbs just for piece of mind.

Thanks for any insight as to what the small 16W bulb does (not the reverse lamp) and any info on the compatibility (or incompatibility) of the 1057 bulbs that were on my passenger side.

This must be for an e53. In my e70 manual it has #6 being a brake lamp and #4 being a brake lamp/rear lamp/side marker lamp. The confusing part is, the manual says the brake lamp bulb is p21w, which matches #4 spot. But #6 does not have that same type of bulb, it has one of the smaller 16w bulbs. According to the manual the 16w is only for backup lamp or brake force display on the lift gate.

The picture is E70X5. I'm looking at my manual (2011 X5M) as I type.

Looking at my manual now and #6 is brake lamp and #3 on the bottom is turn signal. I just looked at the x5M manual and it has a different setup. If you look at the non m manual, the turn signal is on the bottom and brake lamp on top. Weird.
