Engine/Transmission/Transfer Case/Diff Oil Change

Hi All,

I couldn't find much info for my E70 with N55 regarding oil changes. Anyone know how much fluid this car takes? Also, anyone have recommendations on type/brand/weight of oil they use? My warranty is out and I'm at 60,000 miles, looking to flush out all the fluids as preventative maintenance and I'm trying to compile a shopping list.

Hopefully we can use this thread as reference for other DIYers. I'll edit the post as new information gets added. Thanks and looking forward to everyone's input!

Vehicle: 2013 E70 X5 3.5i XDrive N55

Engine Oil
Quantity: 7 Liters
I use LiquiMoly 5W30, I'll be sending it to Blackstone for an analysis to see how it's holding up for the past 7,000 miles of daily use.
BMW Part # 11427566327
OEM Oil filter

Transmission Oil
Quantity: (Guesstimate 6 Liters)
BMW Part # 83222289720
I think I may end up going OEM ATF3 for the transmission fluids, even though it's quite pricey, we only change it out every 60,000 miles..
Pelican Part #: 24-11-8-612-901-M103
For the Transmission Filter, I was only able to find the pan plus filter from Pelican Parts.
http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...TRAUTO_pg1.htm

Transfer Case Oil
Quantity: (Guesstimate 1-2 Liters)
BMW Part # 83222409710
Same case for the transfer case fluids, I'm going OEM since it's not being replaced often.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=27_0066

Front Differential Oil
Quantity: 1.5 L
BMW Part # 83222295532
From what I gather on REALOEM, the front takes 3 x 0.5 L bottles...
BMW Part # 33117525064
Drain plug
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=31_0794

Rear Differential Oil
Quantity: 1.5 L
BMW Part # 83222295532
From what I gather on REALOEM, the rear also takes 3 x 0.5 L bottles and also uses the same part number...
BMW Part # 33117525064
Drain plug plus washer

I can tell you that my local BMW dealer wants near $2000 for all materials/labor to do the trans fluid service with rear diff service. On this car, the pan must be replaced when doing a full service vs just a drain and fill. An indy quoted $925 for the same service...

I think the trans holds some 8 liters, but only about 4-6 will come out when you drop the pan, the torque converter will hold the rest. I'm sure you could in 500 miles or so, do an additional drain and fill(leaving the new pan in place), and remove the rest, but that would be an expensive proposition...

At least I know it's between 6-8 Liters... I may buy extra just to do the flush twice...

The kit does include the filter - they call it the "oil pan", which includes the filter.

If you're going to buy more oil than what comes with the kit, you may want to split them up for best price:

Oil 12 cases ($17.5 each)
http://www.thectsc.com/products/zf-l...er-193-62.html

Trans oil pan/filter ($129)
http://www.thectsc.com/products/oil-...--230-109.html

HTH.

Are there any good how-to guides on all of these? I've found some older transmission ones, not for the 8spd only 6 spd. Nothing on the transfer case, front or rear diff.

the X5 will only spit out 3.5 Qrts from trans pan, rest stays in the torque Converter

at 45k miles the oil was still honey like.. we still did it and I did feel some difference in shifts so dont judge by the color just do it

we did the TC and rear diff, the X5 d doesnt have fron diff, can someone clarify this ?

thanks

Front diff - 650 ml (i.e. NOT up to fill hole) per BMW
Rear diff - a bit less than 1 l.
Transfer case - a bit less than 1 l.
Transmission ~ 5 l with pan drop.

Sorry we both live in Seattle, so we're looking at helping each other out via an install day.

How do you check the level of fluid after the trans is back together? Was hoping for verification instead of just measuring. Does Carly show the level electronically?
