New to me X5 35d and CEL P20EE / 4D16 - NoX effcency

Hi all -- I've been lurking here for a while. I picked up a 2010 335d about a month ago, and liked it so much I just bought a 2011 X5 35d for the winter.

I got the vehicle last night from CarMax. Took it to the BMW dealer this morning for an inspection and some fluid changes. My OBD scanner told me there was an existing permanent P20EE (4D16) code -- NoX efficiency. Dealer said they couldn't find anything and charged my $149 to tell me so (i actually have had a good experience with this dealer).

Less than 25 miles later, the CEL light is on and it is P20EE.

I am bringing it back to the BMW dealer a week from now. Any thoughts on cause? DEF is full, actually they spilled it all over the engine filling it as a part of the oil change the dealer did today.

I managed to get the service history -- car has had several emissions visit and recalls. Fortunately the idler pulley and drive shaft recalls are done.

I have a maxcare warranty to 100k so it will be interesting to see if / how the dealer works with that. I've never used a 3rd party warranty at a dealer but others have reported success with maxcare at BMW dealers. How long is the emissions warranty and would this potentially be covered under that? I knew what I was getting into when I bought these diesel vehicles.

I bought my truck from Carmax as well, if I recall correctly you can return the car within 7-10 days for a full refund no questions asked. They're technically not allowed to sell a car/truck with any type of CEL or tint

Thanks. There is a 5 day return policy. However, I love the vehicle, rare build, and I'm not going to return it for something I know can be corrected with $5k of parts (lol). Also, ironically, i noticed today that the car is tinted too.

Caiken, I've had my X5 35d since April 2015. Have had these emissions related issues as well. Just this past week had the catalytic converter replaced as well as both NoX sensors under CPO warranty. The dealer technician who worked on it said the emissions systems are the weak point of the diesel (which is well documented in many forums).

BTW, what app are you using to check fault codes? I've got Carly, it's been good so far, just curious which one you were using in the screenshot above.
