2006 X5 Smoking
Hello everyone,
Just turned 89,000 miles on my 2006 X5 and she started to smoke. It only smokes at extended idle times. I replaced the OSV rubbers on both valve covers which were both ripped. It did not take care of the problem. My dealer tells me over the phone it's valve guide seals. Is there another OSV that needs serviced? It sounds like the this is a common problem. Any ideas? I just can't believe that most X5's with about 90K smoke. Thanks for your help everyone. Seth |

I just talked to a guy at the gas station and he had a 2005 4.4I X5 like me and said his does the same thing. The dealer told him it was seals? And would cost $4,000 I am guessing valve guide seals?

My 2006 X5 4.4 had the same issue. Took it to the dealer; almost $6,000 in repairs for valve seals. Thanks to Warranty I don't have to dump a smoking X5 for something inferior to it for now!! Very common issue for the 8 cylinder X5. Changing oil more frequently will help resolve this is issue after the repairs. BMW and their change he oil once every 12,000 miles makes no sense. This engine is Big runs hot and needs oil changes more frequently to preserve the integrity of the valve seals.

pressure regulating valve
Just to share with others... i think the popular "easy" fix is replacing part #11127547058. There are 2 that can be replaced on the engine and each are around $20 if you search http://www.pelicanparts.com
I did the valve stem seal job myself and it fixed the smoke problem. It took about $800 in tools and parts, and 24 hours of labor. |
