What Tires?
BMW Guru's,
Need some advise. The OEM tires on my 13' X5M are finally worn out and I need to get some new shoes. I don't track the car, she is primarily a daily and I'd like to switch away from run-flats to help with the wear and ride quality. Can you suggest a brand/model that will ride good with the X5M and give me a bit of life out of the tire and for a decent budgetary price. I want to try and keep the cost lower as I'll also have it aligned right after I get a new set to make sure they don't wear out too soon. On my E46 (ZHP) platform I used to have good luck with Nitto Motivo's, but on this E70 M (X-Drive) platform, I'm lost as to what tires to go with. Here are my sizes: Front - 275 /40R 20 Rear - 315 /35R 20 |

after glancing, I'm kind of surprised how inexpensive you ca get decent tires in those sizes.
Being that they're staggered, life is not going to be great regardless of what you do. An alignment can't hurt as long as it's legit shop that will match things up side to side. I'd suggest DWS06 if you want the softer end of the spectrum for ride, but they get notoriously noisy as they wear in my experience of 2 sets of them. Looks liek they come in under $1100 on tire rack. Personally, I hated how they handled water on teh road past 1/2 treadwear. If you're willing to spend the money, I'd recommend the michelin pilot sport 4S. Comes in a bit over $1500 for the set of 4, but I can nearly guarantee they're going to be a better tire in every situation. They'll be quieter throughout their wear life and handle water on the roads better. I'm just not a big fan of DWS06's, but they are cheap. |

I went to all season light truck tires, and get better wet handling, gave u some outright dry lateral grip. I run skinny 255's all around, and mostly highway commute in it. |

I'll second the recommendation for Continental DWS06 Extreme Contact. Good Traction in wet and dry (and supposedly not bad in snow, but no winter tire), and will last a good 40K miles (maybe more) if alignment is good..
Given that you have an X5M though, and you probably have no need for winter performance, you may want to go with any number of other summer tires. You will end up with a tire that sticks better, but has a shorter lifespan. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S probably being the best (but pricey) option.. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireS...SortCode=60200 Last edited by Best4x4xFar; 03-02-2020 at 08:47 AM.. |

Thanks guys any other recc's? Also, since I'm going away from the Run-flats, any suggestions on what to carry since I won't have a spare - Fix-a-flat (can of foam)?

I am on my second set of the Continentals, and think they are a good tire for the X5M.
That said, I would have the alignment set with less negative camber on the rear end, and ensure that the toe is good. Mine looked great from the side, but once I got down under the back end, the very inner edge was worn to the cords, that was after about 20K. Fronts were still in good shape, but I had clipped a sneaky curb and damaged a sidewall so they got swapped out as well. Not sure on the backup plan, as I have a factory spare. |

On long trips while long distance towing, I carry a spare or two for the X5. If I'm towing long distance I usually have all my drifting tools, so I'd have jacks and stands and etc to change the wheel out. |

Houston does not need all season tires. Just summer will do
For whatever it is worth, I drive on Lexanis, same size as yours on my 50i. No problems yet after 10k miles |

I have had great luck with these. Many Charger 392 owners run them as those cars sit and spin often when leaving a light.

True and I started thinking about that as well. I'm actually leaning toward the Nitto Motivo's as they also have good reviews all around the web for our X5's and I've had good success with them on my previous E46 platform. Plus I can get them with road hazard and install for around 12-1300. They also seem to have a bit better wet traction over the Coni's and here in Houston that's a plus.

Its all in the mind. and how you use your vehicle. Not everyone does extreme driving. My Lexanis are good enough for my regular city/highway driving. |

I went with Michelin pilot sport as3. Supposed to be nearly as good as the ps4s in the dry, and better in other conditions. And should last a little longer. Also cheaper than the ps4s.

I currently have the DWS06 on my staggered 20s. Sidewall is a little soft but than drive nice on dry pavement. In the rain and snow, I’m not sure if it’s the wheel width or the tires, but it definitely leaves a lot to be desired. Feels unstable and a bit swirly.
When the tread is gone on these, I will be switching to Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 N Spec. If I lived in a climate like Houston, I would be rocking Michelin Pilot Sport 4S. |

Bought our X5M with Lexani tires. Fronts are worn due to bad alignment. I intend to get Continental DWS but Amazon had a sale on Pirelli Nero so I got them. I had an aligment done then put on the Pirelli. So far so good.

Iv'e been running Minerva for winters now on my second set...700 Canadian installed for a set of parallel 20's. Very good side wall design...Minerva S220 http://minervatires.com/winter/
They are a Belgian company, with factories in Europe and Asia.... Unfortunately, they don't make a staggered set of summer/AS 20s...as far as I can see.... or they would be on in a heart beat....http://minervatires.com |
