Q Before Buying a CPO '13 xDrive50i M Sport

Hi all. Hope you don't mind the question, but we are going to drive 10 hours in a few days to trade for/pick up a 2013 CPO'd X5 and I just wanted to see if there were any lingering questions I should ask before we sign on the dotted line. I asked about the N63 CCP (it's been done). And I asked about rock chips, tires, etc. All good. What else should I ask? Anything I missing?

Here's a link to the add:

Thanks!

Just be aware, no matter what the sales person tells you, a CPO warranty does not have the same coverage as the standard factory warranty. Also, the CPO checklist is a joke. It's only something the dealer tells the manufacturer they performed (which they normally don't) to get the manufacturer to issue the CPO warranty.

Solid. Thanks! I went over some of the items the warranty covers. Sounds like most things are covered that might break outside of normal wear and tear and tires and brakes, etc.

Anything to look for on a test drive or walkaround? Service record gotchas?

Their asking price of $41k is at least $3-4k overpriced. Ask if the front driveshaft has been replaced. Check for turbo hose coolant leak, very common in the n63, but typically not covered under CPO. I hope you're going to get a thorough PPI by an independent mechanic before purchase..

Thanks for the reply. Good info there. I'll ask about the drive shaft and turbo coolant hose.

I didn't tell you what they are giving us for our trade. Can you show me where there is another 50i M Sport with the mileage, packages and features of this one? I'm all ears, but my research says we are going to pay a premium for premium features (and in the exact color we want). We have been searching for sub-40k miles, '12-'13 only, M Sport, HUD, cold wx package and cooled seats. This has all that and more. And I don't see anything that backs up your numbers of 3-4 thousand over priced. Can you show me exactly what data you used please?

X5 2011

Mine has

52 K miles, HUD, third row, AD, Space Grey , Black leather interior, BSW speaker upgrade and subwoofer upgrade, RSE, premium sound.

It does NOT HAVE - Heated Steering Wheel, Active Steering

Asking 25k and has one year (dec31 2017) BMW extended warranty left.

For that you can almost buy two!

Well, just last week there was one a CPO '13 with M-Sport, M-perf, Cold Weather, Premium Pkg 2, and Tech package (includes HUD) with 30k miles, carbon black on black, listed for $38,500. The only thing the one you're looking at has extra is the active driver's seat.

From wholesale auction prices. KBB trade-in is a good estimate for wholesale price. This car was likely bought by the dealer for about $30 - $31K. Add another $2.5K for dealer cost (CPO, reconditioning, etc.). If they installed new tires, add another $1000. You're looking at about $34K in total dealer cost. Up to you to pay whatever you consider a decent profit for the dealer.
The CPO inventory currently is very thin because the lease returns for 2013 models came in almost a year ago, so that kind of limits your options.

Agree. Options are limited for these cars.

KBB shows $40.3k for this car priced cpo'd from the dealership. Also shows up as a "fair deal" (below market price) on Car Gurus. You can speculate about what you think the dealer paid for it, but it was traded in on a Porsche by a coal tycoon out of WV.

I'm not speculating - I've seen manheim auction data, and about $30K is the wholesale price for a 2013 x5 50i with about 30K miles. The auction price is typically the maximum that the dealer would pay on a trade-in. I wouldn't put much stock into KBB CPO values or retail price, that's merely an average of listing price, not the sale price. For this car to command anywhere near $40K, I'd expect more options like AD, ACC or 3rd row, etc. Just my $0.02 - your decision, your money.

Cool. I'll walk. Doubt they'll take anything close to 30 for the car.

Good thing you were here. Good to know that KBB is valid/gospel for some things but totally invalid for others. You must get smokin deals on all your cars.

Thanks again for all the info!!

Sorry, you misunderstand - they certainly won't take $30k for the car, that's the wholesale price; the dealer has about $3-4k into the car on top of it before he lists it for sale, and theyll look to make a decent profit on it. About $36k is a good price. If you *really* love the car, then offer a little bit more. I didn't mean to ask you to walk away

Just to be safe, do check if the front driveshaft has revised part no. .. the old one has been causing havoc to a lot of people but I think the affected years were 2010 - 2012, they've been getting cars outside of that year range though

I mean for $41k we bought a 2012 X5M with every option on it and it only had 36k miles... I agree that this one is overpriced, but hey if it's exactly what you want, pay whatever you want! Personally, I would never buy a 50i, I see them selling for less than $20k (2011 with 80k miles).

I would skip the CPO and get a Route 66 warranty on it... five-year and 100k miles and it covers about 10000x more than the CPO warranty.

Is this true? Does anyone have an alternative?

When do people usually get an aftermarket warranty, at the time of vehicle purchase, or near the end of the CPO expiration?

Yes, it is true. I've heard good things about CNA - you may want to look into it.
