2012 X5M Engine Failsafe With no Warnings

Guys --

I have about 9 months of CPO left, so i'm trying to sort everything out prior to that expiring.

This morning i experienced a lack of power, didnt want to accelerate (basically felt like a prius), it was extremely sluggish and didnt seem right. I even downshifted manually and tried to punch it, no success. I pulled over, turned car off/on, back to normal.

I believe i'm still on original injectors, could that be a possible cause? No warning lights appeared.

PS, car has just about 55k miles on it

Did the vehicle start in limp mode or did it go into limp mode after driving normally? Was there just a lack of power but smooth or did it sputter like a diesel tractor?

What I've experienced with limp mode specific to this vehicle is if there is a reduction in power the vehicle will 1) display the message on iDrive/Heads Up 'Engine Malfunction, Reduced Power' or 2) go straight to SES displayed in cluster.

Depending on how long you drove in limp mode, there is a change the car didn't have a chance to display any warnings...although, from your description it seems to me like it had enough time.

I'd check for codes if at all possible, if you have some sort of reader. Just because there was no visual warning doesn't mean that nothing was stored.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks for the response --

You know i'm not sure if it came on immediately after starting the car, i wasn't driving very fast, just through town, so it wasnt really noticeable.

As far as the power delivery, it was still smooth, but you could feel the engine restricting power. I've experienced engine failsafe in E53 X5s and it felt very similar.

For the record, i've only had the car for a week, so i'm not sure of the rest of the history if its happened before

When mine went into limp mode due to injectors, it would run/sound like shit. However, when I had issues with vacuum pipes, it would go into limp mode but would still run smooth.

My advice is, go by Autozone/O'Reilly's/Advance Auto Parts and have them scan the car, if you don't have one yourself. They will do it for free and it should work because I have one and it reads codes just fine.

In the off chance that it doesn't give you BMW specific codes it still may show anything that is stored in the ECU/DME and you can try to Google it to get more specific info.

I had to troubleshoot myself since I was fresh out of warranty, but since you're still CPO you may just want to forgo all the pain of troubleshooting it yourself and just take it in.

Keep us posted and don't be too worried. This is a very common thing with these.

Did you have any 4x4 lights or red brake lights show up when it went into limp mode? When that happened to me for no reason it wasn't the injectors like everyone thought but it was a shorted transfer case harness. I would take it the dealer to make sure. Every time I went to autozone it was something different. Just my two cents.

No lights whatsoever, just a limp and loss of power. It was so strange.

The search feature and this thread are your friend before creating yet another redundant thread about the same topic.

P.S. - most autoparts store readers aren't going to get as detailed as something like the Carista app via an OBDII Bluetooth dongle. I've even used the Torque app (basically on the same level as most autoparts store readers) and got nothing. You need a reader that digs deeper.

I agree that the Torque App reader is garbage. However, I have an INNOVA handheld and the OBDLink LX Bluetooth dongle and neither have trouble reading my fault codes. Matter of fact, OBDLink LX was used to pinpoint my recent injector #6 failure...but that's just been my experience with these.

Not the ultimate tool, but not a bad place to start.

Half resolved. Waiting for BMW NA to approve the CPO transfer, the repair is covered by CPO, but they cant do it till transfers....

Should have an answer from BMW NA tomorrow. Anxiously waiting to get the truck back, i'm in a 228 loaner...

Not sure what years the fuel lines changed, but for what it's worth, I changed a line because the newest revision had a sensor that was removable vs permanent. Did you ever try that vacuum line bypass by removing that T which feeds to the rear exhaust valves...I'm telling you, it's a two min process to eliminate 15' of potentially leaking vacuum line.
