It blew up. Need some advice.
So my bone stock, meticulously maintained 2011 X5 (N55) just developed a rod knock. I haven't torn into it yet to see how bad it is, but it sounds like just 1 rod. I guess my first question is this: can the oil pan be removed with the engine in the car?

The oil pan can be removed with the engine in place. You need to support the engine from above and remove the engine sub frame. Search E70 oil pan gasket replacement for a bunch of DIYs.
