Hybrid powertrains for BMW M cars are already being tested

BIMMERPOST NEWS
Hybrid powertrains for BMW M cars are already being tested

COMMENTS

In September, BMW M CEO Frank Van Meel spoke about a hybrid M future and now BMW M Vice President Dirk Hacker has confirmed that M prototypes powered by hybrid powertrains are already being tested.

"We cannot avoid the need for electrification and it is true that we are working on hybrid power already," said Hacker. "For now, all I will say is that we are working on a very precise technical solution, but there is no final decision on how to deploy the concept."

The biggest problem BMW engineers face with hybrid powertrains is the weight gain from the battery pack - weight which would impact a car's pace and agility.

"Adding mass to performance cars is never ideal,” he said. “But if we can use electrification to install more performance, then we start to have the answers. That might be more speed, or it might be the ability for a car to be driven on electric power in a city. It might also be the case that we need different answers to that question in different cities."

“The better the batteries and the more efficient the electric motors, the better the solutions will be for M,” he said. “We are working on always making better cars.”

Fret not internal combustion engine fans, Hacker also confirmed BMW was committed to building combustion-engined M cars for as long as it was legislatively possible. "For some enthusiasts, they will always have advantages, and we have seen with the sales of the M2, which are well past expectations, that these are the kinds of cars many enthusiasts still want," he said.

Not a surprise really is it with the government announcements that hybrid and electric are going to be the only legal forms in 20 years.

Have no fear look at i8, P1, 918 and LaFerrari. These will all be circa 25 year old technology by the time the law changes.

Great. It's just a sign of progress. Progress that can move forward without me. Makes me finally fulfill my dream of buying an e39 M5 or e46 M3.

I tend to love traditional gas but it looks like more and more these hybrids will be outperforming traditional vehicles

No thanks, anyone interested in an M car should buy one in the next few years before we have to deal with this technology. The M2 will probably be the last old school M car.

How about withholding judgement until you see how they execute and until you drive one? A small electric motor with lightweight capacitors instead of batteries to eliminate lag while the turbo spools would be progress that's pretty hard to argue with.

Sorry.. the M2 has EPS, BMW SINGLE turbo technology, DCT , auto rev match that can't be defeated without coding, POWER seats ONLY (with the exception of 150 cars in the US market) , TPS that goes crazy and sends the car into limp mode on track without resetting it specifically.... ... none of these are " old school. " the M2 is middle school at best.. if not new school.

The 1M... is a more likely candidate... even though it does have turbos. I would say the E90 M3 as well however DCT was available.

Those features are old school compared to what’s coming for M cars.

DEFN- Old school

used, usually approvingly, to refer to someone or something that is old-fashioned or traditional:

"amenities that my parents, being of the old school, still take for granted"

Sorry.. there is nothing Old fashioned about a Dual Clutch transmission, or auto rev match. they are CURRENT day items... which is why I said middle school.

manual transmission ONLY in a sports car is old school. DCT is at best, currently new school.... and even in 40 years.. what is new school today won't be OLD school.. it will be in the middle of what is NEW (current then) and what is currently considered OLD right now.

http://onlineslangdictionary.com/mea...-of/old-school

•old. Used when describing something you remember from a long time ago like in the 80's or early 90s

•Old fashioned, out of style, uncool. Opposite of "new school," which is hip, with it, in fashion.

www.urbandictionary.com

1- Anything that is from an earlier era and looked upon with high regard or respect

2- anything that refers to a previous generation of a subject/idea/object etc. Typically they are highly regarded and sometimes the very THING that started it all.

3- from back in the day

4- a positive appellation referring to when things weren't ' flashy but empty of substance ' , were done by hard work, didn't pander to the lowest common denominator, and required real skill. Labor saving devices, shortcuts that reduce quality, and quitting before the task is done are not characteristics of " old school"

5- retro

6- referring music from ' back in the day ' , the last decade, and before

The 6MT is still available.

because there will always be those that can't move forward but rather complaint and don t move at all.. We see them in all aspects of life not just here or our forum. which it's totally ok.. but what I don't understand is how they come to conclusions, complaints, and or even full blown statements how bmw M division is not moving in the right direction without real information about the cars...:

The increased mass and complexity scares me; and it would be inexcusable if it couldn't run 4 or 5, 20 minute track day sessions without losing power.
