e70 running boards
According to my CA, the running board option for an e70 is $300 from the factory OR $850 from the dealer. I am thinking that the $850 option is a little too steep so I am wondering if anyone knows how hard a diy install would be. Can you guys give me some opinions on the running boards as to whether you like or don't like on a 35d? I'm torn!

agree; if you can get it as an option; don't do after the fact.
I didn't get the roof rail on my X5... a $100 option. If I want to add it I'll cost me at least $1000 and that's without labor.

I point this out as many wished they never installed them.

pants
That is so true. I had a Lexus GX 470 and it actually served a function. The X5's height is ackward and not convenient to use. I don't use them to get in and out of the car. Ditto on the pant leg getting dirty or wet.

Also a perk to the running boards besides looks, is it does aid in protecting the side of the vehicle from road debris.... i noticed on a 3.0 loaner i had when hitting some country lanes in rain that they blocked the majority of crud.

I didn't get them with my car, and had to buy them when I picked them up at the dealer. I don't what dealer is quoting you $850, but I paid $349. That didn't include installation, but the total for parts. It's a pretty simple install.

That's true - the running boards catch all the crud, hold it and then deposit it on your pants leg when you exit the vehicle.

Thanks guys, I think I'll hold off for now since I'm picking up the car on Tuesday (I'll post some pics) and I'm so freaking excited!!! I agree with the pantleg issue but I love the looks. Since I didn't order them as an option, I'm going to drive it for a couple months and hopefully forget about wanting them (haha, ya right)!

May get slammed for this, cause I've read many BMW enthusiasts thrashing posts about mudguards. I've had them (and boards) on all of my previous SUVs. My X5 (1st BMW) will be done from production (now in bodyshop) on Wednesday and I've been thinking about guards (mine is coming w/boards). While enthusiasts may thrash what they do to looks, they do catch all of the "curd" and I've never had pants leg dirt issues. Thoughts?

The running boards do protect from rocks and crud, but you get some of the crud on your pants unless you are very flexible. It's about break even from my POV.

yes for what it's worth, that is what i read in Motor Trends long term test of the X6 (running board placement the same as X5) pant leg rubbing ingress/egress.

Does anyone know if the rubber dots can be replaced once worn or would u have to replace the whole running board ? I can see that they are indeed rubber and would wear down from stepping on them in and out ? But I have to agree with everyone about the uselessness of the running boards. . .

1) hard getting in and out of the car, even for my 6 foot frame.
2) I suppose it does block some of the "crud" and debris from hitting the fronts door 3) do you clean your own car? Do you REALLY clean it? If you do, and you're not 8 feet tall, you'll use the side steps. 4) consider your passengers ... if you want. I have a 4 year old son and a 60 year old mother - both use the side steps. In fact, I've been trying to figure out how to remove my roof railings and replace them. Guess what I did? Well, here's a hint: I didn't need a chair or stool to stand on. |

I had them on my 2006 X5 and I could not care for them so I did not order them on my 2007 X5 and I am quite happy as it is.
