Can i BUY sUMMER TIRES FOR nEW jERSEY - 4 SEASONS
So i'm interested Mich Pilot Super Sport to replace the 21" RunFlats Currently on my Truck -- IN South New Jersey - we have all 4 seasons.. and winter is always cold, but a hit or miss for a lot of snow... I KNOW that the summer tires will get hard in winter and have less grip - I'm ok with that and besides I have All Wheel Drive -- is there really any Harm on Putting these tires on - other than their not the ALL -Seasons as recommended per my Location.
appreciate any help/ feedback!

AWD does not make you invincible. Remember that. It's not a silver bullet to cold or harsh weather. It's a drivers aid at best.
That being said, tires are the #1 thing you invest in when it comes to performance. All suspension related work or fancy 23" carbon fiber rotors with 17 pistons per caliper are for nothing, when you've got some 100,000 mile tires on there. Buy tires based on your driving habits. If you're not tracking it, get a set of good all-seasons. The Continental DWS is a solid tire. A proper driver could still run circles around a person on summer (near R-spec) tires any day of the week. If an All-season can handle 95% of what is thrown at it, do you really drive the car to its limit to NEED that last 5%? |

Don't do it. It'll be a huge mistake. Take the time now to set yourself up with a set of winters.

i'm not tracking the x5m - but just read soo mnay reviews on how the other tires handle and feel much better -- I remember years ago when I had my x5 4.8i and I went from Summer tires (without knowing it) to all seasons.. and boy you could feel it right away -- so much more play in the tires.. i wasn't a fan
I realize AWD doesn't mean unstopple... but it helps.. and if I have summers on.. i think it helps justify it more... i'm asking why now the Pilot SS?

I would advise against using summer tires when temps are below 40 and when the ground is wet/icy/snowy. You'll see AWD doesn't do anything and it's just downright dangerous. Winter tires allow much better traction and MOST importantly, stopping grip

Summer Tires
I'm in central NJ. If your going to drive in the snow or slush the summer tires are really bad. I have driven in NJ snow in my 745 and my 335xi and it is not safe. I just bought a set of winter rims and I'm in the process of buying pirell scorpion winter rft's. Like the other guy said, tire choice is crucial. Good luck!

You aren't loosing anything. Even the most trivial testing shows what a 1-2sec difference in lap times over a summer tire. Thus on the street, that means NOTHING.

from the picture above, it looks like you have 21s, if you are planning on using that set of rims, than the only tire options be it the dunlops or the Michelins are all summer tires. You really should get a set of dedicated winters for the winter season, it's for your own safety and the safety of everyone around you. the problem is not with when you need to accelerate but when you must brake to avoid crashing into something, and only proper winters will do that. To anyone I meet, I always say, don't chance your own safety and risk crashing your own car

Good decision to swap out the summer tires. I would only drive in the winter with all seasons or winter tires. If you can, get a set of 18 or 19" tires and winter tires to save on costs and improve performance. If you had kept the summer tires on, I would not be surprised if you got stuck on the GSP for a day like the storm from last year or the year before.

I live it NJ and I went through it for one winter... If you plan on driving places in the winter don't do it!!! The summer tires turn like slicks and don't go anywhere. Get a set of all season continental DWS. That's what I bought they are 100X better !

My truck ice skated the last snowstorm we had last year (I live in NY). We have AWD, yes, but we have wide tires + shitty roads + shitty drivers in general = disaster waiting to happen. Get yourself snow tires.

Yes, you have awd. So you have a decent chance to get moving. The real fun is when you try to stop or turn. It gets sporty when you try to turn AND stop.
Get all season or a dedicated set of winter tires. |

I can't buy the All season dunlop bc i have 21'
My wife has thge White x5 sport with the 20' and All season's -- mine are 21s and yes I reaized summer (run flat) tires are on it So i may be non run flat- summers -- much lihter -- then in winter buy a used winter set up I agree with stopping power.. last winter we had a Light Winter in South NJ -- you realize how bad the roads are (on my car - when your try to stop) - but overall I had fun in the snow too! -- see link

Just to add on what everyone else is saying. I have 20" M sport with summer sport, they are terrible in low temps, snow, ice. I'm currently looking for a winter set or may switch to all seasons.
