Thank God for CPO

Okay so I was driving my 2011 X5 50i last Sunday when I noticed a ticking/grinding noise that got louder as I drove faster. I decided to step on the gas a bit more to see what would happen, and soon after the car jerked to a complete stop and metal started grinding from underneath the car and on to the pavement.

My first reaction was to get out and look under the car. That is when I noticed the front drive shaft hanging and touching the pavement. The car would not drive so I had to get it towed to a BMW dealer.

Once they looked at the car Monday morning, the sales representative called me and told me that the transfer case went, which caused the drive shaft to break then put a hole in the transmission! My car only has 42K miles ! At first my service advisor did not know if all of this would be covered under the CPO. They had to write to BMW Corporate, which took about a day to find out their response. I was anxiously awaiting their response because they quoted me 17,000 to fix everything !

Thankfully, BMW is going to cover the repair (even though some of the necessary work that they are performing is not covered). Their explanation was that the transfer case caused everything, and that happens to be covered under CPO so they will warranty the transmission/drive shaft.

If they did not cover this I don't know what I would have done because the repair came out to be $17,000 in damage which is insane! They said the transmission will take 3 weeks to get from Germany. Estimated time until the repair is complete is 4 weeks. I have a 328i Wagon as a loaner which I happen to like.
Has anyone else had any experience like this with their transmission/driveshaft!? It just worries me if I should keep this X5, I don't know what else can go wrong.

I will post an update once I get my service sheet and car back!

I'm glad you're covered. If they would have (successfully) flaked out on CPO coverage, like they sometimes do, you could have taken it to an Indy mechanic with a good reputation and get it all repaired for $6,000 with second-hand parts, which would take < three weeks to source.

Threads like this make me want to sell the X5M and get an M5. Do you use the X5 for towing at all?

Nope never towed anything with my X5. It worries me as well. I thought it was running good, I had all 8 injectors replaced and this was a complete surprise to happen out of no where. Now I'm considering trading it in. Any suggestions!?

I would like to think (hope?) that the transfer case / drive shafts on the X5M are beefier than the X5.

Damn this sort of thing is startling to read

I would love to own my X5 for years to come, but depending on what I read on here over the next few years, I may have to ditch this thing when my CPO expires a few years from now. 17K….

Yes I think I agree. I'm going to look to trade mine in the day my CPO expires for something else. Almost 20K for this repair is insane to me. Just thankfully they covered it. If they didn't I would of just sold it back to the dealer as is.

In my experience, independent mechanics are only a little bit cheaper(maybe 10%).

My wifes X5D with just over 70K miles has had check engine light go off for third time in 2 months this morning. Who needs this sh-t? Will be looking for trade for MDX or Highlander. She not a car person and only wants problem free driving.

My Indy, Beemer Werkshop in Chicago, has former Perillo BMW mechanics, and just did my oil, filter, transfer case and F/R differential fluids for exactly half the cost of the dealership. Indy mechanics with good reputations are a no-brainer.

CPO has definitely been a lifesaver, and I don't want to own a BMW without one. I'll either buy it CPO, or buy the Gold extended warranty on my own if I can find a non-CPO for the right price that is still under factory warranty. My CPO runs out in October of next year, and that's when I'll probably trade it in. Or, maybe sell it privately six months before the CPO runs out and pass it on to the next owner for peace of mind.

So 8.5k? Im hoping i can land a 3rd party warranty for that 3-4k or i'm selling the car in November.

My dealer sold me 2year/24k warranty for 2,500. I thought it was cheap so didn't even negotiate

No. The fluids for all of those. All mechanicals are fine. I was just illustrating the difference between dealership and capable Indy costs.

Wasn't there a drive-shaft safety recall? In that case, CPO has nothing to do with it. I hope you did not have to pay the $50 deductible. I would ask for that money back, just in spite.

That being said, there is a recall, specifically from the driveshaft. It's very possible your SA or mechanic got it wrong in that the driveshaft grenade'd other parts of your car.

Either way, it's being covered, which is great news.

Well...yah, 100K is a lot! I'm at 35K, thinking can I afford to own this thing beyond just 50K when my CPO expires due to time in service...

Exactly... well known problem. Especially with 2011 MY.

Recall covers it. No need to invoke CPO. Get your $50 back ... Your dealer is being dishonest.

Devils advocate.. If there is a recall and you do not elect to act on said recall in a decent time frame and collateral damage occurs when the recalled part fails should you still be covered? I only raise this concern because this is the boat i would be in..

many have owned these cars well over 100k miles with little issue, i roll with no warranty.
