Good x5m?

Hoping to get some opinions on a X5M I am going to check out this weekend. It seems to be well optioned, and does not have an excessive amount of miles. Car fax is clean. The factory warranty expired a couple weeks ago I believe.

My concerns are that the car was a north east car, and likely driven year round based on mileage. And based on the carfax it seems the car has been at this dealership for a year now.

I would for sure get a PPI and be buying an extended warranty. But before getting to that point, is there anything in particular I should look out for when I see the car?

Thank you!!

$46K asking price
2013 x5m with 46k miles
Space grey over full black leather and piano black trim
Active ventilated seats
Driver assistance package
Cold weather package
Adaptive full LED lights
Premium sound
Soft close doors
Comfort access

Everything sounds good. If you get the warranty it should cover any potential concerns. And the dealer must have certified it before hand presumably? Just drive it around and satisfy yourself.

The one I picked up had been at my local dealership for some time as well. The market for gas guzzler, expensive, German SUV's is not as big as you'd think.

Well it's not being sold by a BMW dealership. And there is no particular certification for the car as far as I know, besides their general claim that it is in good shape.

Perhaps can use the amount of time they've had this x5m as a good bargaining tool.

can you also find out if the airbag has been replaced yet? Or the BMW assist - has it been disabled or does it have the retrofit?

When I searched for my X5M nationally, I sent couple of cars to a local bimmer specialized repair center to get a thorough check. I believe it was worth the money.

That sounds SUPER low. I just paid $54K for a fully loaded 41K mile, X5M 2013, CPO model that has 9 months left of original warranty. A car that has been sitting at a dealer for a year is HUGE red flag. So between the price and sitting around, I would be highly skeptical. Which car/dealerhship?

Carfax shows the recall was issued by BMW, but does not have any follow up info about the work being completed. Doesn't seem like a big deal to me. Will get completed when the replacements are available from BMW. Same case with my M3 now.

I would do the same before making a purchase. Figure I would try and do a once over myself first though since this one is relatively local.

It is at Off Lease Only. It's like CarMax. But I think they're only located in Florida. I wonder if the car sitting on the lot is related to the pending airbag recall being completed? Or maybe just like ksa said, the market here might not be so big for this type of vehicle. Even here in Miami I don't see many x5m or x6ms on the road.

if the car is a 2013 is should still be under the 4 year / 50k miles warranty
Get the VIN #
call your local BMW guy -- serevice department - and ask him when the "In service " date is -- then 4 years from that date is expires -- so any 13 should be good until 2017 -- so you'd buy the car and take it right to BMW to get anything and everything fixed while under warranty

$46k seems awfully high in my humble opinion. The market for these E70M's have tanked this year. There are some people trying to sell their well documented and cared for trucks in the classifieds for 30-40k because the trade in value has plummeted. At least that way you know who the seller is.

Most just got off original warranty since they were in service in mid/late 2012.

Then you must think I got really ripped off at 54K

On a serious note, I searched for a few weeks. Not many quality low mile x5m's on the market. I only wanted CPO personally and there was 2 in the country at the time. I flew down to VA and drove it home 6 hours away. KBB price was in line for it.

This is a fully loaded model that OP is referring too.

In service oct 10, 2012. So just out of warranty. Would love to believe it there were any issues/maintenance due this dealer would have gotten it taken care of.

CPOs are a rip off. They are nowhere near the factory coverage. You pay a premium for the psychological aspect of CPO, but the warranty is for the manufacturer-not for you. You're much better off not paying the premium, and getting a third-party exclusionary warranty.

Agree with 3rd party warranty. Last month I purchased a 2013 X5m with 46k miles for 49k, and it has factory warranty till February 2017. I asked about CPO'ing the vehicle, and the dealer told me it'd add to the purchase price. So instead, I purchased the vehicle (from out of state), brought it to my local dealer with the safety net that it still has factory warranty. Now I have purchased a 3rd party exclusionary warranty (actually offered by BMW dealership here) for $4k for 5 years/100k miles (this is on TOP of current mileage - so covered till 146k miles). Exclusionary is the key here - all the other warranties will find a way to not cover you.

You may want to be careful of cars from Offlease only - a lot of their cars seem to have some damage history.

a couple people mentioned that to me. and sure enough it seems like the car probably had some damage that was repaired. I asked a couple times about if the car had ever been in an accident and the salesperson kept giving the same line that the car has a clean carfax. well we all know clean carfax doesn't mean much. the car drove well, but it creaked a whole lot, the door panels on the driver side seemed to be poorly fitted, and there were some spots where the clear coat looked unoriginal and poorly done.

the search continues..

OffLease has a lot of low priced vehicles. I looked at them when I got mine and upon further research I decided the "deal" wasn't worth the "Deal" with them. Also, the communication was poor with them and I felt like they were trying to hide things. I wouldn't by a vehicle like this from a dealer like that. These things can EASILY turn in to a nightmare that cost you a lot of money. Buy from a well known enthusiast dealer, from BMW or a private party.

I've had pretty good success buying used BMWs from CarMax. They're not perfect but reasonable.

Yea but they wont CPO a car unless it passes certain inspections and maintenance was done on time. If BMW refuses to CPO a car its usually not a good sign. My CPO was a 2011 I bought it in 2014 for $46k with 38k miles on it. Ive used the warranty on multiple occasions with out any problem. I would have been out roughly 2k if i did not have the warranty and did not really pay extra for it. Non CPOs were selling for 52k when i purchased mine. Its all about working the deal.
