2011 x5d glow plug module replacement
My string of bad luck just started after 2 years of no hassle with my x5d. FRM module went out. Dealership replaced it for free with 140,000 miles. However, they wiped out my performance tune when reprogramming the FRM module (doesn't make sense how those 2 sync ). I sent my pcm back to the tuner who graciously reflashed it (thanks Jim!) but now my glow plug module shows its failed. Car run flawlessly. How serious is it to drive with a failed glow plug module? Sounds like I need to remove the intake manifold to get access to the glow plug module. Known failure item on high mileage x5ds?

Glow Plug Module is a common failed item, I would almost consider it a wear item but an item that should theoretically last a while (50k+?). It can't hurt to replace the module when you are replacing the glow plugs. It's a fairly do-able DIY with basic sockets, ratchets, screwdrivers, etc Just have to take numerous item's out. If you are at 140k and the module hasn't been replaced it's probably time.

Is it common to replace the glow plugs when replacing the glow plug module? The fault shows only the module but if the glows plugs are a wear item, then I'd love to know.

I think it's common practice to change both at the same time. Better to take it apart once then twice right?
