X5M MPG?

How bad is the X5M mpg? I am contemplating on picking one up for daily but not sure about the gas part. I drive mostly local roads so if im getting low teens, this car wouldnt make any sense at the moment....

I have an X6 50i and I just did 250 miles on 20 gallons so that's 12.5. Not much difference. The best I've done is 300 miles to the tank but this was purely to see what the most was that I could get...I barely went over 2,200rpm I drove like a grandma

Mpg

I have 4500 miles on my x5m and average 12.9 mpg according to the computer. That is with driving in normal mode 90% of the time.

I get between 11.75 and 13.75mpg (17-20 l/100km). Since I have done the Dinan Stage 1 upgrade, I have tended towards the bottom of the range (12mpg, 20 l/100km).

Gas needs to be an afterthought if you purchase the X5 or the X6 with the V8TT. They were built with performance in mind, not gas mileage. If you are worried about affording the gas on a $100,000.00 car, you are a very conflicted individual. I apologize if the previous sentence insulted you, I didn't mean for it to be insulting. If, in fact, you can afford the fuel, but you are trying to be responsible, you need to ask yourself what is inherently responsible about a 550HP Suv?

It seems as if the X6M gets better mileage. I have had three trips of 1000 miles where I averaged 17 mpg for the entire trip according to the computer when I returned. And this is with periods of high speeds and going up the sides of a mountain. I can't understand how it is possible to get 12 mpg with these vehicles, unless you are using fuel that has a lot of alcohol in it, which I do not recommend!

12mpg

MPG rating can be quite different for diff people. My 11.75-13.75 comes from intense city driving - stop/start/peeling at lights, etc... Avg speeds of 25mph. THAT is a lot different than driving on a highway, for instance. Yah on highways I do 15-17mpg too...

My first post here on xBimmers.com. Just want to add my 5-cents to this thread, as it stands now, I may not be driving my new-to-me 2010 X5 M hard enough. I mean, I drive a 58 mile one way commute in Northern VA and if traffic doesn't bog down, I easily see 20+ mpg hwy,...at a cruise control speed of 73mph (prolly more like 70mph due to BMW's well know speedo error). Additionally, I've yet to see less than 14.x whenever I decide to have a little fun with it.

FWIW, I have also have an aging '05 4.8is with some 143k+ miles on it and I've never gotten more than 20 mpg on road trips. That said, the way I see it, given the 205hp difference between the two models, I'd say BMW did quite well with the efficiency of a 555hp engine in a 2.5+ ton vehicle.

for mostly freeway driving I am getting close to 15mpg (on X6 5.0i).

I don't doubt it when you are crusing on the freeway, reset the mpg computer and gets 20mpg reading. But if you reset mpg, at the garage even on long trip on interstate and see the mpg when you arrive at the destination, I doub't you even get close to 20mpg. It's the method of measurement that counts as much as driving style, just so that we are comparing apple-to-apple.

With my new injectors and plugs, I'm seeing 13.7 to 14.5, prior to that it was 11 to 12.5. Most of my driving is on back roads, with some stop and go mixed in. I see 18 to 21 on the highway, cruising between 70 - 75.

If you're getting 17mpg in an X6M constantly, you should stop lending your X6M to your 125 year old grandmother!

My X6M was recently getting 99.99 MPG and has since gone down to 37.1 MPG. This is how I know my MPG meter needs to go to MPG meter heaven because it's broken.

Driving on backroads I was able to get a personal best (or worst) of about 9.1MPG - haven't got it into the 8's. This was driving in M mode and manual shifting, driving pretty hard. Usually I'm around 10-12mph before my MPG meter went sideways and decided I'm driving an i8 instead of an X6M...

The only time I suspect you can do consistent 16mpg or higher is if you leave the car in D mode (it upshifts through the gears so you're in 6th gear at 40mph) and have the Power (maximum horsepower) setting disabled.

In other words, not fun at all!

You can replace "X6M" with "X5M" in this post and all still applies.
