You want to be able to burn the file to a DVD disc or just play it in a dvd player? Many dvd players have a USB port that will support MP4 files via usb drive.

Unfortunately, while fairly new, no usb port on my dvd player. I really need to convert mp4 to mkv to watch on dvds....

not sure if it's available for pc or mac but ffmpeg is a command line utility for linux that pretty much can do everything you ever dreamed of when it comes to converting media files.

i think it would be as simple as:
ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp4 -c copy -map 0 outputfile.mkv

if you're super desperate and don't have linux, download the free vmware player, download an xubuntu iso, and create an xubuntu vmmachine. maybe you'll like it and ditch everything else one day. haha
