Brakes squeaking
Hey everyone,
On my way back from Brussels I noticed that my breaks have started squeaking as I reach a full stop. It tends to start when I'm around 10km per hour until I reach a full stop. I've only done about 6000km with her so surely it can't be time to change brakes??? Anyone else had something like this happen? Thanks for any help! Dimitri |

Check the disks for scoring/marks, if they are marked then BMW will change them for free under warantee, they changed both fronts including pads on mine. I had done 2K and they were marked up, a stone or something must have got into the pads. All done and no more problems now.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm going to pop into my dealer on Monday to tell them about it just in case they have to order some parts since I already have an appointment booked for the 7th to upgrade the idrive due to a volume issue.
Thanks again! Dimitri |

Ask them if they would install Ceramic brake pads:
AFTERMARKET CERAMIC BRAKE PADS The main reason why the aftermarket got into ceramic friction materials is because the OEMs were using it. In the 1990s, a growing number of OEMs were using ceramic-based pads. Sooner or later the aftermarket had to follow suit and offer their own ceramic-based friction materials. In 1999, Raybestos announced the availability of their own "revolutionary" new brake friction formulation made from ceramic ingredients. The new product, which took three years to develop, was called "Quiet Stop." Jerry Forystek of Raybestos said ceramics is still a big story, but that many people do not really understand the differences in ceramic compounds. "The real issue today is composition. How much ceramic is really in a pad and what does it actually do? The bottom line is how the pads perform on the vehicle. Our pads perform very well. "The main advantages our product offer are reduced noise and dust, excellent wear characteristics and good fade resistance. Before we went to ceramics, we could never get the same kind of low noise levels, low dust and longer wear with other materials." Forystek said ceramics are more expensive to manufacture and cost more, but the same is true of most other premium friction materials. You get what you pay for. He also said that ceramics perform well in a wide variety of applications, but for some applications other materials work just as well or better. It depends on the vehicle platform and the type of driving. "That is why we use a best fit philosophy when choosing a particular friction compound for a given vehicle application." |

I have the same problem too
its really annoying to hear break noise and ur car is new i got it when it reach 2000 now i drove up to 10k noise still there I went to dealer and he told me that because the material used for brake is in low quality so they will change it for free after week and as I read in this topic, I realized that its factory problem for x6 since everyone got the same problem... |

Sorry to hear that this is a quality issue. I must admit, as much as I like to drive the X6, I'm not that impressed with the build quality. I have rattling inside the cabin from different corners, I find that the noise inside the cabin when hitting high speeds on the motorway is way to high and now the brakes!
I really hope nothing else pops up! |

[quote=dmlgc;3866721]Is the squeaky brakes isolated to the 5.0 trucks? Maybe different brake components compared to the 35?

Well wouldn't you believe it, my breaks squeak all the way to the dealer. I get there and they ask me to take an engineer on a quick test drive to hear the noise, and it's gone!!!! Don't get me wrong, I'm happy it's no longer there, although after the test drive I did hear a slight squeak but nothing like before.
At least the engineer was kind enough to tell me that he'll take the wheels off and check out the breaks when I take it into have the idrive update on the 7th. As for the cabin noise, don't know if it's isolated to certain models. I doubt it's the 50i engine that makes the extra noise in the cabin but I'll have a word with them on the 7th. What annoys me is that I was in a ML AMG bought 2 months ago and we hit 215km/hr and I couldn't believe my ears! Barely a sound in the cabin apart from a slight whirring of the engine. No wind at all!!! Same goes for a Lexus GS that I drove. For the amount of money we pay for this car, I really did expect much better in terms of isolation. |

However, I was surprised at the cabin noise when on the highway with concrete roads. Funny thing is when I run across an asphalt highway it is dead quiet. So I believe there is some resonation from the tires. Keep in mind, my 330 vert, and 645ci coupe were noisier on the highway than the X6 and they road much rougher.

Also, what type of tires (including rim size and style) do you currently have on your ride?

I have noticed the tire issue (not unexpected) but what I really notice is the wind noise from 65 to 100mph+. I would expect it to be very quiet up to 100mph, above that and wind noise is ok as it keeps me focused that I am driving very fast.

Not sure what you are hearing but at 130 mph my X6 seemed quieter and smoother than my Lexus IS350 was and does not feel like you are going as fast in the BMW. I was actually surprised at how quiet and smooth the X6 is around 100-120mph. There is definitely wind noise but you are also going 100+MPH and there will be wind noise in any vehicle |

I will have to carry out some tests to see if the noise changes in different conditions. I drive to London quite a bit and have noticed the noise on both French and UK motorways.
My X6 has the 21" rims with some Dunlop sport RFT, not too sure of the exact model. At around 130km/h (legal limit in France) the noise isn't too bad. I'm not sure if it's the RFTs or if it's the wind. Once I start to hit 180 the noise gets really loud. One thing I know for sure is that the engine doesn't play that big a role in the noise since when I'm going along at 180 the noise seems to be mainly the wind, but as soon as I want to accelerate then you really hear the engine kick in to give it some more power. I realise that at very high speeds all cars will have cabin noise, just like the ML AMG did, but I just find that in the X6 this cabin noise is way too loud. I had two passengers with me and they both were amazed at the noise in the cabin. |
