Exclamation X6M FRM problem

Hi, I have taken our e71 or X6M to have the battery checked as the light was coming on.

Diagnostics showed we need a new one. The problem is when they put it back on the car started on the angel lights by itself, windows wouldn't go up or down, indicators wouldn't work, sun roof worked, radio worked.

I had to leave the car there and then was called to be informed the FRM module needed to be replaced too.

Thing is everything was working fine before I went there. They have offered to do the labor for free but we still need to buy the module and the battery ourselves. I am scared we are being taken for a ride and something went wrong during the re attaching of the battery.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Battery cost is €232 and FRM module €370 So I am hoping that would be our final bill. Should I kick it up with them or shut my mouth as they're giving free labour and tests and diagnostics?

That's a hell of a lot of cash for a battery!! I would diagnose why the FRM failed. Usually when they go it is because of a short. Maybe water got in there or something/someone shorted out a window motor or light. That fact that you had a light come on which prompted you to take it in tells me there is possibly a short going on somewhere. Any sign of fluid or water near the FRM? I believe when replaced they also need to be properly coded. If there is a short, that needs to be fixed or will keep having the same issue.

also, if you are going to DIY, dont forget that the replacement battery has to be initialized. you will need software for this. some independent shops have this specialty software.

Had this message on my M5 a few times, never on my X6M. I use the CTEK charger whenever the vehicle sits for a few days. My wife has only driven her Cayenne a few miles a day for the past 4 years and has never had a battery issue. I think this is a BMW problem.

What about fabricating a switch for the battery? Anyone familiar with the factory battery on/off switch on Ferraris?

I do also recommend the CTEK charger** especially if you are gone for a week or so during the winter.

*Had the battery replaced on my 2011 X6 50i as well as our 2010 Clubman S
**I "think" the battery on the X5/X6 is an AGM type battery and that is a different setting on the CTEK. Check with your dealer to see if you have this type of battery before charging.

Ha, actually there is a switch that is magnetic and in the open state when the car is shipped, then there is this cool little tool (they left it on my car on accident) that ships with the car - it is a magnet and used to flip the switch. I suppose wouldn't be too hard to figure out where that is and swap it out somehow.

Except... I think the car does NOT like to go brain dead for a long period of time...

Well, you've piqued my curiosity....

How do you know that dookickey is for the reason stated? As far as having a dead battery for extended periods, I can't see why the ECM would care.

Mini has been denying all claims for increased battery discharge indicating a battery not holding charge even when the car is under warranty. It recently happened to us. They claim unless the battery shows a dead cell, its a wear item.

I had my X5 battery replaced two years into ownership for increased battery discharge. 6 years in, the problem has yet to re-occur. Suffice it to say, this will be the last mini we purchase, and we will gladly tell people they don't fix known issues with their cars.

I just bought the CTEK device and hope to "condition" the battery when I have a few days when the car is not needed.... hope this will solve the problem.

Solved!!

I have the same problem the cold winters in Canada are horrible I have been getting the "increased battery discharge" warning every time I start my car I'm guessing I'm going to need a new battery but did anyone experience their heat not working like the defrost works great lots of hot air but the vents don't I read somewhere when the battery is to low it doesn't allow the vent to work in order to conserve power only allowing the defrost but my steering wheel heater turns on so does heated seats ... any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.

*** solved

Went to the dealership got a new battery and bigger Agm 92ah and all problems solved if you battery is drained a lot of functions won't work due to the battery consumption protection or whatever it's called cool feature but had my ass frozen when only defrost worked

I bought my CPO 2013 X6 xDrive50i at the end of December and about a month later i started getting the "Increased Battery Discharge" warning. I picked up a charger to see if that helps and it does for about a day or two and then it will eventually come back. My commute is very short, usually 4.5 miles each way, and my car sits for most of the day. I get the message a lot more often lately.

I have made an appointment this week to have it checked out or most likely have the battery replaced.

I currently have my X6 at the dealer and i just got a call from my service rep saying that the battery is original and not covered under warranty. Is it possible that my 2013 X6 that has a build date of 5/12 still has the original battery?? There is a Service bulletin saying that the battery has to be replace every 12 months/10k oil change. I find it hard to believe i'm on an original battery...

Also, i bought the car CPO'd 3 months ago.

I changed my battery less than three months ago (AGM) and programmed it via Carly. No issues until about a week ago. If it sits longer than a few hours I get "High Battery Drain" upon start-up on the HUD only. I took it to get it tested at O'Reilly's (suspected battery and that's where I bought it - three year warranty) and the alternator and battery are fine. Wondering if the IBS cable is the culprit. Any ideas?

Every 12 months? I'd tell them to stick their prestigious BMW emblem up their arses. That has got to be, to date, the most ludicrous statement ever...

Yeah, seems pretty excessive to replace the battery yearly. Has anyone on here had to change the battery that often?

My dealer replaced the battery free of charge but they told me this was something that should have been replaced back in 2015 when the CCP was done. So they can't cover it under the warranty, they are going to send the bill to the dealership that performed the CCP.

Same problem, changed battery

Hi guys, sorry to revive an old threat.

I've been having the same issue the past 2 winters. I've just had the battery (twice) and alternator changed but still get the same alert whenever starting the car. My mechanic plugged in his reader and confirmed that the battery is charging. Really not sure where's the issue from.

I unplug every usb from the car before turning off. Any idea what's causing my issue?

*Also, I've been having a burned plastic smell coming from the vents when iddle. Not sure if related.

thanks!

I think mine is caused by the fan. I drive the car once or twice a month and owned it for 5 years or so. I usually drive it for a 10 minutes each time i drive it and the fan runs for a while after i turn the car off. Our M5 does the same thing. I always had this message in the winter. Every once in a while i'll throw it on the batter tenderer. I gave up on the message.

You could be on to something StatenEye....

I bit the bullet and just changed mine at the dealer (2013 X6M - garaged in winter)....Besides the warning message (last two winters), what prompted me to change was noticing all seat/mirror setting had changed...and I didn't want to cause unnecessary damage elsewhere (i.e the alternator). I was using a NOCO trickle charger.....I wouldn't recommend the Genius chargers (the on -board seem ok) as the wires are crap in freeze your ass off conditions...

We also have a 2015 X3.....reported a "Battery Discharged - Start Engine" warning this week. Charged it up...and decided to install a NOCO on-board charger....this vehicle sits outside year round.

But my sons 2008 323i is still going strong on the original battery....probably jinxed that...but gave it a charge for good measure. This vehicle also sits outside.

Should have updated my post above - this is where my quest led me regarding the battery issue:
https://www.xbimmers.com/forums/show....php?t=1372349

As far as the burning plastic smell, check if the plastic divider at the back of the engine bay is still in one piece. I definitely don't think that these two are related.

Good luck!

Comfort Access option? The X5M comfort access pretty commonly has door handles that are dead and drain power. Check to see if they're all working or not.

As stated above - Plastics above the firewall melt onto the heat shield right above the downpipes/cats. Pretty common nastiness in smell and smoke.
