I'm glad it's back with Clive Owen....I esp liked the Star one. Man that was so long ago! I really hope they do these films justice

I loved watching these when they first came out. I'm looking forward to seeing Clive back in action.

Finally BMW doing something right and getting back some excitement into the brand. Cannot wait to see what they come up with. I loved watching those films and it motivated me to get a BMW in the first place! So excited.
They should just build better and more innovative cars. Lately they turboed all M cars which is a cheap way to keep up in the HP war. Model after model their cars look the same - hard to tell the difference between old and new, I.e. 7er, 3er new 5er. Most of their tech is what others already have. They basically copy others. No wonder they need Hollywood's help.

Look at what Americans are starting to do. Inexpensive but sporty and powerful cars. The engine in the Shelby 350 is a work of art. Whereas BMW m got a moded 3 liter i6 from the 3er. M's used to get their own engines but not anymore.... I m still a BMW fan but man the completion shows them how to get things done or else they will loose and the movie won't help. Just saying.

Should be sapphire black, like the car they used for the driving assist teaser..silver it's just too bland for this kind of stuff. But, well, at least will'll see the car at last (Hope sooner than that tho).

I've got the original DVD and loved it. It inspired me to own a BMW. Looking forward to the new one!

I don't know. Back in 2000 the concept of making a film just for the Internet was edgy and innovative (which is why so many stars signed up). Got BMW in with a young and energetic audience.

These days I'm not so sure the message is the same. In the age of amazing GoPro videos, YouTube highs and lows, can these movies dazzle in the same way?

And if they inspire someone to visit a showroom, will they be thrilled with a 320i?

Producing one of these films is a veritable drop in the bucket compared to R&D ... and the marketing value is priceless because of two things:

1). Pedigree. As noted by other posts, BMW originated the viral car video as a digital marketing tool. Resurrecting it with new blood both in front of and behind the camera (sorry: Guy Ritchie isn't what he once was) is a great decision because ...
2). Momentum. The last one of these wasn't that long ago. Though the idea is not innovative anymore, the effectiveness isn't diminished much because of familiarity, respect, and quality. It's like the Rolling Stones releasing another album: everyone pays attention even though the band's been doing it for more than 50 years.

Sorry, but the post above is full of ignorance. One example: Guy Ritchie isn't Hollywood. He never has been. His base is Paris and London, and the vast majority of his films are European productions. Another: I don't think CFRP is tech someone already has ... just sayin'.

How is Hollywood vs London studio make a difference? My point was that BMW should build better cars, truly innovate, and lead the pack. Do you disagree? And yes, I am aware of cost difference between r and d vs a product placement into a movie. How does it help BMW be a better car maker by spending less on R and D? What is your point of stating that?

Regarding carbon fiber, aside from i cars we see very little of it used in standard models. What is shocking given CF availability is that BMW cars are still the same weight as the competition who does not have CF capability. New 7 that was supposed to be huge on CF use is only 100 pounds lighter than previous model. So how much CF is actually used in there?

No, I don't disagree. But BMW is not the company it was, nor will it ever be again. My point was producing a movie costs very little compared to R&D costs, and the potential return is exponentially greater for the brand. To say that BMW should use that movie money for R&D instead is silly.

As for CFRP: it's trickle-down, as most game-changing tech is. It'll be in most BMWs in 3-4 years. As for your point about turbos: that's been beaten to death. It's a reality that even Porsche recognizes. The days of large-displacement, high-performance engines in anything but low-production vehicles are as numbered as manual transmissions.

I totally agree that BMW's future could be in reclaiming its past legacy that was compromised by recent focus on luxury/3 series

As far as CF goes well....its a lot more expensive than plastic and steel and what are major sources of weight in the car?

Structurally speaking I would prefer a steel car that can be easily repaired amongst other things

But outside of structural components, engine and drive train how much weight is there to be save with use of CF and how much would it add to cost of vehicle

I love the fact that bits are avail for upgrade and I think BMW would do well to continue to offer upgrades like this

But I also think it would be cool to offer lighter weight seats and other bits....seats can weigh 75 lbs or more

Offering options/uprades is the way to go in my opinion.....especially when the market in the US at least is moving towards NO options for most cars......you get one size/trim and no options outside of how they build it

My take away from this thread so far is everyone loved the original videos and everyone loved the e39 M5 movie in particular. Ahhh the nostalgia for the e39 M5…. Is it sad we all collectively gravitate to that car as "the good old days"?

It was just special in a completely understated way. That we can be certain BMW won't be going back to.

I loved the e39 before the Madonna video but it was still very much enjoyed. I watched that video probably 20 times. But these are the images that sold me long before the movies. My god this was good advertising...

Looks cool for entertainment purposes, but build cars to really get excited about. It starts with the product, first and foremost, and fun things like this can help reinforce reality rather than be contrary to it.
