Anyone removed radio area trim ?

Has anyone removed the trim around the radio area, specifically the red rectangle in the picture ? I need to add switch and since there is some blank area next to tail-gate button seems like a good place.

I know in the X5 I had the panel was just a plastic piece with holes for the buttons and it popped off.

i believe you have to "pry" out the trim on the side
