Tough decision on new car - help me out here please....AW or Platinum Gray+ oyster
Quick question:
3 month old dealer demo with 3,000miles, platinum grey with oyster and Twin Turbo motor, sports pack and 20" 336 wheels. Or for a few thousand less: New Alpine White with the same options, but single turbo 30d, but with heated seats and black interior. Now I have a white 335 with black interior, so I didn't want another white one. But, I like heated seats. But I also like the Twin Turbo What do you guys reckon. Funny thing is that I just sold the wagon and yesterday it looked like we had no options for the right replacement car for a few more months... The long story - funny how the universe, or should I say the secret works So I have been looking for about 4 months to find a used LCI model Diesel with sports and comfort access. In Australia, they cost about $100k for the base model and I also want comfort access and sports pack. I have been trying to negotiate with a private seller for a 2.5 year old 40d with all the right options. She just wasn't budging on the price and the fact that it is 3 states away, my wife was worried. Also the vendors were constantly changing their story on why they were selling; it just didn't feel right. Then out of the blue, I get a call to buy the 320 wagon and we more or less sold it yesterday (they are from interstate) and we didn't have another car. I said to my wife one will come up, ideally a 40d with oyster interior and comfort access. Today at the local BMW dealer (who knew that I was in the market) they said they had nothing, but on closer inspection they found a 3 month old in PG and Oyster interior. I said it was meant to be; only missing the heated seats. We agreed on a price verbally and shook hands. I took it for a test drive for a couple of hours. Man that 40d motor has some torque! When I went back, they said that they couldn't do it for the money, it would have to be $5k more. Damm! Then when I get home, I check the internet and find that today someone has posted for sale a new one AW 30d (single turbo) with the same options, but also with heated seats. I knew about this one as the owner ordered it and now due to business reasons doesn't want to take delivery. Apparently he has put on a $25k deposit and will loose about $10k by selling it to me. I need to decide within the next 3 days if I buy it, otherwise he will have to buy it and pay for it and then his finance payout figure will be higher. So basically I have gone from no options to two hard decisions. The head says get the white one; brand new with heated seats. The heart says get the twin turbo. Where I live, we would barely use the twin turbo, as the speed limits are enforced vigorously and there is only one highway which I would use once per month. Maybe the answer is get the cheapest one, whichever that one ends up being... |

I could't comment on the diesel engines as I never had them, so single vs twin turbos effect on power in such engines is not clear to me, but here is my opinion;
a turbo engine has a lot of torque and power delivery at a low rpm, the effect of having 2 turbos vs one, although nice, would not be that much different. you will still have most of the effect with one less turbo to go wrong! once you are rolling, this effect is minimal. demos are usually abused by test drivers, their engines are not broken in as they should be. white erxterior imho is the best exterior colour on these cars. I have both black and light grey interiors...unless you plan on treating your interior like royalty, get the black. heated seats is really a good option, but I only have it on for few minutes and then it is off for the rest of the trip...if you can put up with cold seats for few seconds, which we all did up until this option became available, then missing it is not that big of a deal. get the brand new white one, you are winning on the money front and on the essential options as well. my opinion only, hope you enjoy. |

I suppose that if I can save $5k or more, then I will go with the 30d.
I would rather spend the $5k on an LSD for the 335i. If I really want a bit more power, the there are always chips... |

personally I'd spend the extra $5k for the 40d, i've driven both the twin-turbo and single turbo when we were in the market for our X5. The twin-turbo is definitely feels nicely to drive as it has more torque at lower rev.
PG sports pack + 336 20" looks hot! |

40D has to be better than 30D - you can never have too much power. Having said that the 30D does a very good job.
Would there even be a need to have heated seats in Adelaide? |

and no, you don't need heated seats in Adelaide, but they are nice. Can be retrofitted for $1500 or so if need be. |

4 turbo's ready to go.
The white one was a 40d with the M-Sport kit on it and mine is the Gray one. I wanted one sporty car and one elegant one. |

Very nice, prefect colour combo = PG + oyster interior. These 20" wheels look great as well.
How does it drive compared with your 335i? |

how it drives compared to the 335 is interesting. the 8 speed gearbox is fantastic, nearly as quick as the 7 DCT, but not as harsh on the changes. The engine is fantastic if you don't like revs, kind of feels like a lazy v8 until you put your foot down. I can't believe how quick the x5 picks up speed for such a big car. It's quite a lot of fun to drive. The 20" runflats are smoother than the 19" on the 335, so the ride is better. I haven't really pushed the x5 as hard yet, but I was impressed with the monster torque. The sports seats aren't as comfortable as the ones in the 335, but OK. Altogether a different, but very rewarding car to drive and when you start to drive it hard, it's pretty damm good. So good in fact, that if I had to have only one car, it would be the X5, as it is more practical and nearly as fast, easier to live with and is still fun to drive. |

glad you like it, very positive feedback on the 40d.
actually i prefer to drive my 320d than the X5 3.0d as it is smaller, handles better and quicker off the line than the 3 litre single turbo diesel. got any plans for mods yet? DTUK tuner box, remap? |
