Oil consumption test - dealer overfilled?
A week ago, before my CPO warranty expires, I took my 2012 X5 E70 to complain for a second time that the car is consuming too much oil. I think it is about 1 quart every 800 miles or so but the trend is more oil consumption. They would only do an oil consumption test. 500 miles later the oil level hasn’t budged. This is the same inexplicable scenario as my last oil consumption test. Therefore, I decided to remove a quart of oil. Just went for a drive and the oil indicator still says oil level is at max. Does that mean the dealer tried to trick me by adding more oil? How can I demonstrate it’s burning a quart of oil in less than 600 miles if they overfill?
Doesn’t overfilling hurt the engine?

actually problem start with no oil dipstick.. idrive is not measuring it %100 precisely..
i guess it wont be totally fair to say that they overfilled it as an assumption even if you feel like that.. only way to know is talk with them again i guess.. |

Here is my data. With 5000lbs trailer, 240kg passenger and about 150kg tools on everysingle drive my X5 35d went through a quart oil in 6000km, DEF refill every 14,000 and tons of diesel....

Have you pulled the reinforcement plate under and checked for leaks? Overfill can cause leaks in oil pan gaskets. Also, I’m sure your oil level sensor is broken. My wife’s e70 said max no matter what. I went to replace the oil pan gasket and found that the sensor cap was broken inside and gave false readings...no CEL or codes...just broken sensor

So I took another quart out and when my wife was driving I asked that she check the oil level. It was halfway below the minimum line and the very bottom. So below minimum level or red. I asked her to pull away and add half a quart of oil. It is now back to green above minimum. She drove max 10 miles at a below minimum oil level. Could this have damaged the engine? She said it was and is driving fine.

What model X5?
I think BMW has a service bulliten where their solution was to add an extra quart of oil due to oil consumption issues in some of the X5 models. |

Yes I read the same on the dealers being instructed to add some extra to lengthen the time before it is seen as low again by the owner.
I haven't heard of overfilling by 1 qt or less causing an issue; the dealer being instructed to do so seems proof of that. Likewise her driving ~10 miles with the level below minimum won't hurt either. Not a good practice for a race engine on a track, but I am sure its fine here.
