New to board. X5M with issues
Hi guys.
I've been lurking on the board since I just bought a 2012 X5M with 34k miles from carmax. Cosmetically flawless with carbon lip and m alcantera steering wheel and black aftermarket wheels. No accidents and it has had all injectors and plugs replaced last year. . After buying from carmax I took it in for a ppi at the local BMW dealer. They came back and stated that I needed the following: Valve cover gasket leak Lpfs replacement Upper oil pan gasket leak I took it back to carmax the next day and they paid for all repairs at the dealership. After 2 weeks in the shop, I got it back and in the same night it pulled a cel for lpfs. So now it's back in the shop. So over the last 3 weeks I have driven the car for a total of two days. I have carmax warranty up to 100k miles so that should take care of everything going forward. My concern is that I have five days after I get it back to decide to return it. Did I get a lemon or are these repairs common in a five year old X5m with 34k miles? I have owned an e36 m3, e39 m5, and 2 mcoupes and I don't think any of them spent this much time in the shop in such a short time of ownership. So should I keep it figuring they have fixed some major things now or return it? Thanks for your help. I love the car but the initial on slaught of repairs has been troubling. |

Lemon laws only apply to new cars, not used cars. Unless Carmax has some ridiculously-flexible return policy, you're stuck with it. If somehow their 5-day return policy still applies even after weeks of owning it, dump it. Normally, used cars are sold As-Is, which means with all faults. Fortunately, your post-purchase, pre-purchase inspection found covered repairs.

I got 55k on my '13 and other than plugs and a coil I haven't had any issues with the truck. I may have developed a small v/c gasket leak, I smell oil but never see a drip. But otherwise she's been awesome!

Due to the amount of time it has spent in the shop since I bought it, roughly 20 days, they are giving me what amounts to 30 days to return it. I have 10 more days on that offer. So the question is should I keep it since some it seems most of the major repairs are done and rely on the warranty, or just assume this is a going to be a pattern with his car.

I really do love the car. It's red. Not crazy about the new wheels carmax put on. Other than the repairs since I bought it I do love it.

40k. The price is high but I figured new wheels tires cf lip m alcantara steering wheel and the color is great. It has most options. And no accidents with low miles. I think I'm keeping it. I got the 100k full warranty through carmax for 2k more with a 100 dollar deductible. They gave me a great trade in on my old vehicle. I would have gotten an m5 but have 3 kids, one in a car seat and one in a booster so this fits my needs.

That is a tough call - normally would be a no brainer just to walk away and keep looking - but with a unique color and options, it may be hard to find something comparable.
I personally had a bad experience with CarMax, but it sounds like they are doing the right thing for you by covering the repairs, and the 100k 'warranty' gives you some piece of mind ($2k is a good price - make sure it also covers you on enough time that you plan to keep it) |

You should be OK with the warranty, provided you don't mind potential lengthy out of service intervals. This should be a cautionary tale to all others though. Don't do a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) AFTER you buy a car.

Thanks for the input. The 100k warranty is for 5 years and covers all repairs done at the Bmw dealership. Had the same warranty on my old car through carmax. At 90k miles on my old car they had replaced my transmission front diff and even my shocks under the warranty so I trust the warranty.
I would normally walk away but figure if these repairs are all done properly and with the combo of warranty low miles and my love for the vehicle I should be ok! The sa at the local BMW also was the sa for this vehicle when the prior owner had it. So luckily he has provided me with all service records too and everything has been up to date. |
