Exclamation Would a used X5 be a reliable car ?

Hey all I have a '11 128i. Great car, while it was being serviced they gave me a loaner '13 BMW X5 35i for the week. My opinion of the suv was that it was fun, high up and a nice car. I didn't like:. Fuel consumption was horrible, $90 to fill up sucked, compared to my now $45-50 to fill up the 1 series. Another thing I thought $50k for the suv was a little absurd, I mean, it is a nice suv but kinda boring for 50k.
The extra space was nice considering I have a growing family. But to be honest, I don't think the X5 is worth the money. Just seems like a normal SUV to me.

My 1 series is great and I've had minor things taken care of by my warranty, the major one being a new differential.

So for a second car I was looking at used X5's online and some of them are kinda cheap with low miles. But I read articles online that said people should stay away from used x5's because of the repairs etc.

What do you all think of a used X5 ?
Will it be reliable or just a money pit ?

I have an '11 X5 35i M Sport and a '11 135i M Sport. Both great cars, but if I were to choose between one, I'd keep the X5. The fuel consumption was odd: the X5 has a larger tank, so obviously it will cost more to fill it. You have the 128i, so I cannot compare, but the fuel mileage will be better in the 1-series simply because it's a smaller car even though the engines are the same.

Your loaner was probably a stripper with zero or little packages. Do some research and look into the M Sport model. Definitely not a "normal" SUV. Or drive the 50i.

I think a used X5 is a great investment. There are many 2011s coming off lease so there is lots of choice. I haven't had issues with mine, and my dad is on his 3rd X5. Just don't buy one without either a factory or CPO warranty and you won't have to worry about reliability.

To me any high dollar car is a money pit. BMW are worst for high cost to repair if
no warranty. Simple procedures can set you back major buck. I've had Lincoln,
Lexus, BMW Suv's all about the same, set cruise head down the highway.

Price not so bad. Looking at a new F150 and its nearing 55K (for a Ford truck).
Even boring chevy and Buick SUV can get in the high 40's. So 50K is nothing
for a vehicle today.

90 of fill up, the tank is like 20 gallons so its 1/3 more than your 1 series. i dont see why having a bigger tank is a bad thing.
50K.....its the same engine and similar interior as a 335, so why should it be less? its more materials bc its a bigger vehicle.

the N55 are as reliable as any other N55.
the old 4.8 was a nightmare, and the 3.0 is slow.

i sold my 335 convertible for a 2011. picked it up for 37K with 42K miles. the prices are even less now.

for me its a great truck, it is quick for the size (though i put a downpipe and tune on it to get the most out of it).

all SUVs are more expensive in every aspect.
its pretty understandable

Totally. Have been spend money on high dollar cars, would not considered it a great investment, because have got no returned, and not to mention of loosing value ~$10k/year. With that said, have no intention of looking at other brands.

Let someone else take the depreciation hit, nothing wrong with buying used, if it saves you 40-50% off a near-new X5. If it's under 4yrs/50k miles, you can always add a BMW warranty to the car from any BMW dealer (Shop around for the best price, it varies by over $1000) or buy a 3rd-party warranty that many other dealers offer.

I have 2007 530xi and 2011 X5. I have had the 530xi for four years and had one $2,300 seal repair . The local BMW dealer repaired it. No other issues since (102k mileage.)
My X5 no issues ,bought it used with 51k mileage.
Before these two I had a 2001 530 series. For all issues I went to my local garage, he was usually 1/3 of the cost for repairs of the local BMW dealer.
If it's beyond warranty go to your local garage. Way cheaper than BMW dealer

It will probably be no more reliable than your 128, if you had to pay for those warranty repairs you might not be so happy with that car.

I bought an 18 month old 50i. The fuel mileage sucks but it is the most fun I've had in any vehicle for a long time and my previous car was a moderately tuned 335i N54.

Only had it 6 months but noting major. Still under warranty and maintenance.

Amusing that you are asking about a used X5 after seeming to list out what you don't like about it....

As RaceTruk said, in all respects it will cost more to run than your 128i in terms of consumables (check out the cost of 20 inch 315 section tyres). But they are very reliable.

I just took the plunge last week and bought a 2011 X5 35i for my wife so I can have my 335 back. it has low miles 36k and a lease return CPO'd. I would not buy it if it wasn't certified w/extended warranty. My wife loves it. Its black with the same interior as my 335 that she's been driving.

1st post here. I've had 3 Volvo XC90's and just had the engine go on my 07' V8. Not getting another one. I've now got my eyes set on an X5 with the M Sport package. If you have one for sale let me know. Hope this forum is as good or better than the the Porsche forum I spend 1/2 my day on.

My son and I are both leasing x5. We both plan on turning them back at the end of the lease. Not a vehicle you want to own without a warranty or a dealer that is too far away. Fun to drive but not fun to own.

Can you give us more info? What has gone wrong with your X5's to make such a statement? I'm curious since I'm looking to buy a 2011 or 2012 X5.

Also curious what cars you drove before this X5...

Pray tell, kind sir, what other SUV for 50K is less 'boring'?

Both my son and I lease 2012s, I have a D and he has a 50 ( at 2 yrs of a 3 yr lease)

For my D-
1 set of tires in 12k miles ( $1500)
wheel alignment
check engine light- replace heater element
check engine again- need visit to dealer
takes two weeks to get appt

For his 50
tires in 16K miles
wheel alignment
replaced all fuel injectors
other check engine light- can't remember why
replaced turbo
sunroof stuck open- replace mechanism- kept car for 2 weeks waiting on parts
also two weeks for apt but a different dealer.( always short loaners)

That is all I can think of.

Doesn't seem like anything was wrong with the D. Premature Tire wear is normal since all x5s run factory camber and performance tires

I see you're from Texas. If your experience is anything like my service experience at BMW North, I want to avoid that place like the plague!

+1 performance summer tires are only expected to last 12-15k...if you are lucky.

Get some DWSs if you are looking for better tread life.

I have a 2009 X5 xDrive35D - the diesel one - and I couldn't be happier. I bought it with 122,000 kilometers (not miles), and it runs solid. I agree that the gas model is a gas guzzler, but the diesel variant is more acceptable, comparable to my extended wheelbase minivan.
