If you have the M Steering Wheel (as part of the M Sports Package), I think so.
Same with the heated steering wheel.

In the end it was probably a BMW Clusterfuck

Along those with the OPs question, is it not possible to get Adaptive drive and paddles on the X5? I have been searching for days and can't seem to find one or an answer

Might depend on the year, but I don't think I've ever seen a 50i or 35i with paddles with or without adaptive drive that was made before 2013.

It's an easy upgrade though.

I posted a link to one on the 1st page of this thread - a 2012 50i. There is also a 2012 35i for sale right here in Seattle where you and I live, posted on Craigslist, that has paddles (I ran both VINs through a BMW VIN decoder and both came optioned with paddles - they were not added after the fact).

This was my purpose of bumping this thread - trying to get more info on this option, but it turned into a thread about who has paddles/who doesn't, who likes paddles/who doesn't. Nobody actually answered the original question….at this point it appears to be a standalone option, not affiliated with any package, even though I don't see it on the 2012 option/package list published by BMW North America.

That's what I was saying - it may have been a standalone option, not dependent on Adaptive Drive or any other feature. Must have been a special order item, because it's not part of any package that I'm aware of.

I think so - it's just strange I've never seen it listed in any of the documentation/publications released by BMWNA.

As far as I can tell, it was part of the M Sport package on 2012+ models.

I just logged into bmwusa, and checked my VIN to see what options are on my car.

Code:
M Sport Package
M Sports leather steering wheel with paddle shifters
M steering wheel
Sport suspension
Adaptive Drive
BMW Individual roof rails Aluminium
M exterior parts in body color
I am pretty sure, the paddles do NOT exist on my car. Which makes me think since i bought it used, could someone have swapped steering wheels?

I'll look again since I have a new Cobb Accessport to install and document for you guys.

EDIT: Confirmed, I do not have paddles on my car. Yet bmwusa seems to think so based on my VIN.

Though as noted previously, there are 2012 non M sport models out there with paddles, so they aren't exclusive to M sport.

To answer this and your original question. Paddles were added to both the sport and MSport package steering wheels at no charge starting with the October 2011 production of the 2012 model year e70 X5. 2012 model year production began in the spring 2011 and the paddle addition was a mid-year upgrade for the 2012 model year. This is why some 2012 35i and 5.0 Sport and MSport X5s have the paddles and some don't. Also, paddles were only added to vehicles with an 8-speed transmission, which is why the Diesel (which only came with 6-speed) did not ever get paddles on the e70.

I have a 2012 X5 35i with sport package that was a January 2012 production and the actual code on the build sheet for the paddled steering wheel was "2XA." I recall when I ordered my X5 in late Oct/early Nov 2011, pestering my SA to confirm the paddles were included, as paddled versions of the X5 had yet to arrive on Dealer lots for me to see. ...It was an important option for me, coming from a 5-speed manual.

Thank you - outstanding 1st post!

Finally a believable answer. I just ran a 2012 VIN for a 50i with paddles and the build date is February 2012 (a very late 2012 build), so that would validate what you posted.

It's no wonder so few 2012's have paddles - a good % of them were built before October 2011.

You think they are pre-wired already?

If you are asking about pre-Oct 2011 X5s, I am not sure, but its been discussed here and in other forums before.

From my point of view, its just not worth the risk or the expense. Good luck!
