Love My New 2012 X5 But it is missing......
Considering the name BMW and all the German Technology we all have come to admire, I wish they could have done two (maybe more as I drive it) things different.
1. The Nav is not a touch screen which I loved on the Cadillac SRX. Allowed me to get a rough estimate to the next junction point. 2. You cannot close the tailgate with the remote or from inside the vehicle due to the two piece door system but come on BMW, surely you could have made the bottom electric as well. Heck, you put camera's under the mirrors. I know, getting picky but with a sticker of just over $64k at least the Nav should have been better. |

1. I am glad it's not touch screen. After driving a few vehicles with touch nav screen, I appreciate the knob on iDrive. Very easy and effortless to zoom in/out, change to Multimedia, Radio, etc. Would have been horrible experience to have to reach all the way and take eyes off the road, or blindly punch the screen.
Also, the only touch technology that works for me is capacitive multi-touch. You can feel the difference by comparing an old (year 2005) Nokia phone with an iPhone. |

I had my x5 coded and I can press the key or the button inside to close my tailgate. It even will do it while the vehicle is in motion.

When you touch you take your eyes off the road. Non touch is the way to go.
Try holding down your tailgate close button on your key fob. Hold until it starts to close. |

1) having owned multiple touchscreen nav systems, after an original knee jerk "yuck" reaction to the BMW Nav, I've grown to quite like it and even prefer it over touchscreen systems
2) if you want to go the coding route, you can get get the key fob to close the tailgate. It's not a tech limitation, just some damn lawyer said it should [not] work like that from factory. Didn't want kids getting squished. |

On the topic of lacking functionality, does it irritate anyone else that the TPMS will only show "green" and "yellow" with a "tire pressure is low" message and not tell you the actual pressure in each tire?? I want to know "how low"! Running RFTs it's difficult to tell with just a visual inspection.... Anyways, cars a third the cost of an X5 often have the actual psi readout, not to mention MBs do too.

I had a 2006 RL that had an iDrive-like controller with no touch screen that got me used to not having a touch screen and I grew to really like it. I just replaced that car with a 2012 CTS Coupe that brought me back to a touch screen. It does have a knob for some limited functions, but it's primarily a touch screen and I miss the controller.
Our X5 replaced our 2004 Toyota Landcruiser that had a touch screen. Because of my old Acura, I found the iDrive easy to get acclimated. |

Had the touch screen in my 2003 GS430. HATED IT! Try and touch something while driving - the car bounces, your finger bounces. The worst! There is a reason manufacturers are moving away from these things.

Speaking of things we don't like about the nav system....
I just got a 2010 X5, my first BMW, I previously had a Mercedes ML450... I haven't yet found a way to (automatically) keep the voice from continuing to talk when I'm on my phone (via bluetooth, talking and listening through the vehicle's system). Does that bother anyone else but me? In my ML350, the voice would AUTOMATICALLY be muted if I was on the phone. It's VERY difficult to understand the nav instructions OR the person on the other end of the phone when the nav lady speaks! ALSO... In the ML350, there was an option to lower the level of the music OR NOT when the nav instruction voice spoke. I don't see such an option in the X5. Anyone know how to make that happen? Seems like when the nav voice speaks, whatever I'm listening to gets totally muted. What a drag! I like to put the nav voice just a little louder than the music I'm listening to, so I can hear it AND the music. Or if I'm listening to talk radio, then maybe I might want the radio muted when the nav voice speaks... But I really would like the option! Anyone know how to access such an option??? Thanks so much for your insight! Ken Newman Irvine, CA 2010 X5 4.8 |

Why can't the navigation screen go "full screen"? They market it as an 8" navigation screen but you only get 5" of map screen with the 3" of it being a menu. Am I missing something or a setting somewhere, or is this just the way it is?

When you're in a map, push the iDrive knob to the right. There should be a checkbox on that menu to turn off split-screen. When you do this, you'll get a full-screen nav.

I saw another post mentioning the 2009 could not disable split screen like the newer ones can.
