TPMS Question
I'm not sure if all TPMS are the same or if I need a specific kind for aftermarket 22'' wheels...can I just buy any kind or do they need to be BMW specific so I don't have the annoying flat tire symbol on my dash?

Depending on the price difference, if its not a whole lot, I'd probably just go BMW just to save hassle but thats me.

I get my BERU/HUF brand used on CL or eBay. Make sure you get the right one for the year car you have.
If you want new, lots of aftermarket versions work. There is one little design detail you need to pay attention to: the OE Beru/HUF have a metal stem valve that is adjustable .... it swivels relative to the TPMS monitor base. The reason for this is so that it will fit the BMW OE rim profile and lay flat. In the example below you can see how an aftermarket TPMS does not fit the BMW rim profile properly.

Cattivo - How did this go down?
I am getting a temporary TPMS alert every other day or two, it goes away within 15 secs usually. I checked pressures, all fine and normal. I am guessing one of the units battery is dying? How long should they last? My build date is Feb 2012... The dealer I bought it from in March 2015 put new tires on before I bought it. I assume they did not replace them as standard procedure at that time, that was only 1 yr ago. If I assume correctly, is ~4 years normal for these to be dying now?

The life of TPMS batteries depends greatly on the driving style and conditions. If the TPMS is off the car, there is almost no depletion of battery, as the tpms sensor unit goes to sleep mode. The battery depletion is highest when there is frequent changes in speed (stop-and-go). Highway driving at relatively constant speeds again isn't that taxing on the batteries. The manufacturers quote anywhere from 5 - 7 years as the typical life of a TPMS sensor, and/or about 50 - 60K miles. I would not say your TPMS dying now is unusual. It so happens that PAX5 has a relatively new set for sale - check the classifieds! HTH. |

Wow, great! So I assume these are not under the CPO coverage?
Just verifying because I am not inclined to dismount and mount all the tires myself... Also I would let the dealer repair some of my curb rash while they are doing the work. Last edited by heatmizr; 04-25-2016 at 09:21 AM.. |

FOLLOW-UP:
As my SA informed me that replacing the sensors due to low battery would be covered under my CPO, I brought the truck in yesterday. Turns out they detected a signal from all four sensors, and had no error code stored indicating a lack of signal. So they replaced the antennae instead, and then re-programmed the vehicle (This is nuts that a simple antennae swap needs to be coded; unless they strictly re-code as a matter of course for any hardware changes). As the issue was VERY intermittent, and temporary when it did occur, I don't yet know if the new antennae cured it for sure. It's rare that it went more than 2 days without displaying the "Malfunction" message so I guess I'll know in a few more days.
