Buying a 140k mile E70 X5M - is it stupid?

Hi all,

I'm considering buying a X5M. There are attractive deals in the 120k to 150k mile range. I'm just wondering what kind of longevity can be expected from a well maintained S63. I have heard it's better than the notorious N63 but is it crazy to buy a hot V with those miles?

I daily an E93 M3 three seasons of the year, so I'm familiar and comfortable with the routine (and less routine - rod bearings) maintenance costs of M vehicles. My budget will support a fair amount of preventative maintenance and repair. But is it going to blow up in 50k miles, or are these machines good past the 200k mile mark?

Thanks,
Max

Expensive!!!! I'm in the middle of a rebuild on a 2011 x5m s63. Don't do it. Trust me. I'm well over 30k so far. Just dropped $3k last night just on fuel injectors index 12.

Now, also have to consider I have pure stage 2 turbos $5k, the motor n trans was $6k, etc etc. Forged rods n pistons, block sleeved, heads walnut blasted and valve seals redone. So depending on what you want to do with it, there's those notorious issues you will have to deal with, like oil consumption, replace valve seals, oil leaks, gaskets, timing chain stretch, oil pump chain stretch, timing chain guides crack n need to be replaced, 4 vanos solenoids, add catch cans..... List is endless. Don't do it

Thanks for the perspective. I was thinking about getting an unmodified example and leaving it stock. My S65 is supercharged and provides plenty excitement, so the stock setup would be more than enough for me. But I'm wondering if I should look for a 35d and go to a stage II tune instead.

Love my 35d! Much less maintenance heavy (after some pre-work, of course) than the S63. You won't get the power an S63 can put down but you'll have enough. AND good fuel mileage to boot!

My 2nd car is an E60 M5. The S6/85 and M57 is a winning combo IMO

This really seems much more sensible. However I'm going to make a bad decision and buy an S63 with 140k for $13.5. Lord help me. I imagine I'll be a regular around here soon ..

Good luck! If any of us were sensible we'd be driving Toyotas.

I'd be less concerned with the mileage and more concerned with the condition. I see cars with locked up motors at 80K, and i also see guys with 160K still cruising around. It's really all about the maintenance on these cars.

Any details on what you did for rods and pistons, where did you get, how much etc? I am doing the same for my X5M, know it will be a penny but i enjoy older BMWs and I make them forever cars for my collection.

Sophisticated Redneck and I are going to tackle it together, should be a beast and a pretty ride when done, show car etc.

Are you doing all the work yourself or someone else? We're going to do the M5 exhaust manifolds and either those Turbos or some customs, I've been told Pure's do not make more power, but do keep us posted. I seen folks do bolt ons and not get much but in your case, you might be able to raise the boost a ton.

Let me know if you want to talk offline, PM me, love to get some of your thoughts and where you got your parts etc. Thanks

The longevity of a vehicle can depend on various factors, including how well it has been maintained, driving conditions, and individual components' reliability. While the S63 engine in the BMW X5M is generally considered an improvement over the N63 engine, it's important to note that high-performance engines, especially those with forced induction, may require more maintenance and potentially have higher repair costs compared to non-performance engines.

Have an 2013 X6M had warranty out to 6 years which expired in Nov 19 - never tuned, looks and drives as new… Hope it stays that way… as it’s not going anywhere….

My 10 is at about 154k currently, I bought it with 90k. expect to do the fresh air inlets and vent hoses regularly, cooling systems stuff, do all of the drivetrain fluids, and thats a good step. Mine had the lower temp oil cooler thermostat installed when I bought it, and I think the lower running temps help for sure, but is still a hottt engine.
Oh and get a good alignment, as these beasts eat up tires, especially the rear inner edges.
