X6 xDrive50i Delivered this past weekend!!!

It’s been three long months since the Cayenne Turbo left the family stable. We were sad to see it go. It was a great car for four years. But, the lease was up and it was time for something new.

My dad looked at many news cars. He wanted a Cayenne GTS for the longest time, but I wasn’t too exited out it. Yeah, it looks cool, but Peppers are everywhere now. And the performance of it didn’t impress me.

After every new car we looked at, I pushed him back towards the BMW X6. We drove the 3.0L I-6 model earlier in the year. Dad wasn’t too thrilled with the straight-line performance, but thought the handling was amazing. I convinced him to put down a deposit for the V8 model. Then, we waited.

The 2008 V8s started to arrive in August. All were pre sold, so we couldn’t drive one. Another problem was one important option we wanted (full leather) wasn’t available. Naturally, it was available in the ROW market. When BMW announced the 2009 specs (and a nice price increase), we ordered BMW of Austin’s first 2009 xDrive50i.

It took six weeks from order to delivery. BMW provides waiters with an online tracking guide (not very up to date) and a 1-800 number (very accurate) to watch the progress of the car from initial order to delivery. I called about every week.

Last Friday, when the computer said the X6 was on the truck, it arrived at the dealership. I immediately went to take pictures and check it out (excuse the phone-quality pictures):

My parents made arrangements to fly to Austin from Houston the next day. The BMW dealership let me borrow a car to go pick them up at the airport with. When we arrived the X6 was tinted, clear coated, and detailed, waiting in the showroom. The salesman said people were trying to buy it.

The “delivery specialist” went over the features with my dad. My dad couldn’t believe all the features of the car: keyless entry, bluetooth, nav, voice recognition, adaptive suspension, soft-close doors, sat radio, yada, yada, yada.

I followed the X6 from the dealership to my place and noticed something cool: It looks freakin’ awesome on the road. With the 315 wide tires and the huge rear-end, it looks like nothing else available today. People were slowing down and staring wondering what it was.

The next day, I traveled to SA to watch my brother’s hockey game. The trip was worth it, because I GOT TO DRIVE THE X6.

Impressions: OM @#)*%)*#*( GOD. SERIOUSLY?

Pulling out of the parking lot, I gunned the throttle. With enough torque to pull a tree stump out of the ground, we reached 60mph quicker than my car! I took a medium right bend without breaking and applied gas. It just went around the corner. No Drama. My brother’s friend couldn’t believe it. The ARS (Active Roll Stabilization) in conjunction with the EDC (Electronic Dampening Control) give the X6 handling abilities our Cayenne couldn’t dream of. With the Cayenne, I would turn it, then car with then heave to one side and then it would corner. The X6 does this much better.

It’s so bizarre to be in a vehicle that big that exhibits NO body roll. It’s so strange. To top it off, the manual mode for the tranny shifts almost as quickly as DSG. The engine is so free-revving, I felt tired for the poor tachometer.

And, when I was done having fun, I took the car out of sports mode and the ride became softer, the steering wheel lightened up, and it became quiet.

It was a little hard to park at the rink b/c of it’s size and limited visibility. Yay for the PDC!

My dad let one of his coaching friends take it for a spin. He kept trying to brake for the corners, but I keep yelling “throttle, throttle, throttle.” After we took a U turn at a ridiculous speed, he said “This thing shouldn’t be able to do that.”

To wrap up my thoughts:

*The X6 is pointless for many people. It seats less and holds less cargo than the X5. But, it costs more. Gas mileage is pathetic. The rear headroom is tight, and you can’t see out of the thing (This is kind of a positive, because you feel as if you’re sitting in a cockpit).

*It looks waaaay better in person than it photos. It has so much presence on the road.

*It drives so much better than our Cayenne.

*The exhaust note sounds like a crazy beast. It’s impossible to take off quietly. LOL. So fun. And when the X6 did take off, everyone’s eyes followed it.

*The fit and finish of the interior is fantastic. Everything feels expensive.

*The attention it gets is a little nuts.

*It makes my heart beat fast. It's so exciting to drive.

These are all the pictures for now. My mom is having technical difficulties uploading them:

I've had mine for a couple of months, it is a very fun car to drive. I know what you mean about the cornering abilities, seems ridiculous that car this size corners that well. Congratulations to your dad , have fun.

Congrats. Nice truck.

By clear coated I hope you do not mean paint protection.

Also, why would you get the windows tinted? They come tinted with the rear climate package. Is it due to excessive heat in Texas?

Oh, sorry, I meant clear bra'd.

We didn't get the climate package b/c it's a waste of money. So, the X6 came without tint from the factory. You can see from the "off the truck" pictures, it's not tinted.

The tint serves two purposes:

1. Reflect some of the heat. It's so hot here.

2. It makes the car look better. The X6 has so many lines (b, c, d pillars), and by tinting the car, it makes them all blend into the glass.

And, yes, we love VR. I'm going to wax it for my dad over thanksgiving. Definitely the color with the most personality offered.

Thanks for all the compliments, guys!

Fair enough. I like the rear climate because you get the tinted windows, sun shades and of course the rear A/C. The front A/C has trouble cooling the rear passengers. I don't see it as a waste when you have passengers especially is warm or cold climates.

Does the standard come with rear ac in the back with out the climate controls.
I thought I saw the X6 without the climate control package
but it has rear vent for the A/C but without seperate controls or digital readings.

Not sure. It most likely has pass through vents rather than separate blowers.

I've got one without the climate package. It has dual air outputs in back which have the edge wise knob on the side that can close off the outlet but no temperature controls. I doubt there are separate fans because when you close the outputs in back you get significantly more air out the front.

Wow. Thanks for brightening up my day! I love cars and love sharing my journeys with them. My affliction started in 1996 when I saw the Boxster for the first time in 1997.

I'm usually on the Boxster board (ppbb.com) but I'll definitely stick around here.

Have a good one,

Matt
