Winter Rims and Tire Suggestions

I am looking for winter rims and tires for my 2012 X5 SAV with M sport package.

Everything I have read speaks to 18" rims being best for snowy weather.

I don't want to blow the bank on winter set-up.

Are both TSW and Beyern rims reliable? I do like the styling of 1 or two of them...

And Any suggestions for tires? (I have read about Pirelli Scorpion ICE and Bridgestone Blizzaks here...)

Thank you in advance! This forum is a fantastic resource for X5 owners!

I have run Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60's on a set of 18" OEM wheels for the past 2 winters. I put about 9k on them per winter. They have performed very well in snow/on ice - good, solid feel - and also impressive performance in dry weather. I'll buy them again when they need replaced (which looks like it will be a few more winters....much better than expected tread wear).

Currently running 19" 223M wheels as the winter set up with Conti Winter Contact SSRs (runflat) - they are simply awesome in the cold and snow. 255/50/19's.

I like them as mine is also an M Sport and it suits the car - giving it an OEM look without looking "undertyred" - and they do the job fantastically well.

Try to find some OEM wheels off another member and add winter tires. That's what I did and am very happy. Only issue you will find is that with the sport package (as I have) the rear wheels will look small and "tucked in" because of the wide wheels used in the summer setup. No biggie for winter I guess.

Yes, I hate that as well!! I have the sport package with the 20" wheel option and the fender flares make it look ridiculous when downsizing for winter. For this upcoming season I picked up a set of H&R 24mm spacers. Haven't put them on yet to see if its a good fix, however I accidentally bought an extra set (thinking I'd need them in the front, but no longer think I do) if anyone's interested PM me....

The Nokian Hakkapelittas are purportedly the best true snow. I have had Blizzak and they are quite good.

I will be purchasing Nokian Hakkapelittas 255/50/19s for my Xdrive50i here in a few weeks.

I did quite a bit of research on this topic, however, have an X5 35d model. I purchased for Pirelli Scorpion Ice and Snow non run flat for $766 and will get an additional $40 Visa Rebate Card. I went with the non run flat option based on what I had read on these and other boards with regard to handling of RFT vs. Non RFT. My Bridgestone Duelers are run flat, however, will not work during the winter as I live at 6 700 feet and we get a lot of snow, around 500 inches during the season. I purchased a set of used 18 inch OEM BMW X5 wheels, had all of the imperfections removed, two were repainted by my local dealer, and then polished them with Menzerna and my random orbiter, then had the Pirelli's fitted today. They look like new! Almost can't wait for winter, and will carry Fix a Flat in lieu of a spare. Based on my experience in my 2000 Landcruiser last year, snow tires make a heck of a difference, and the Pirelli's are supposed to outlast the Blizzaks. I remain a Bridgestone fan, however the $400 difference between Pirelli Non RFT and Blizzak RFT allowed me to afford an extra set of wheels and purchase new TPMS.

For climates like Washington, you want a sport winter and/or good winter tire (like the Nokian WRG2). The reason being the snow tires are terrible in all conditions other than snow. Since you are probably driving in non-snow conditions a lot more than snow conditions, you will need/want the shorter dry stopping distances and better overall dry/wet handling of this type of tire.

If however you live in Denver (higher elevations) and/or Utah as two people here do, then a full snow tire is in order (like the Hakkapeliitta).

Are we able to run 18's on the X6? I thought I read somewhere that 19's are the smallest you can go???

We used the OEM 19's for our winter set up and added the Pirelli's. We run staggered 20" Beyern Mesh for our summer set up.

Both the Pirelli's and Blizzak's are very good in the snow and ice. (Run the Pirelli's on the X5 and the Blizzak's were on our old ML320). The Pirelli's have worn out much quicker than the Bridgestone's however. Both are simlilarily quiet and capable on dry pavement.

No comment on the Toyo's as I'm unfamiliar, but the Conti's are NOT for any serious snow or ice. We run them as our summer tires on the X5 and got caught with them on late last fall. They are a fantastic all season tire that perform above average on dry pavement or in the rain. For anything more than a centimeter of snow (1/2 inch for our US friends) or any ice they are what you'd expect out of an all season....mediocre at best.

My father runs the 19" OEM wheels on his X6 as that is what BMW recommended....and yes, he does always listen to the dealer suggestions...lol.

Yes, we can run the 18's, if you go to bmwusa, and look under the vehicle accessory tab, you will see that the only size they sell for winter for the x5m is the 18" style 209. With the Dunlop grandtrek snow tire for $645 a piece, so 2600 for a set.

As for the Toyo Proxes ST2- stay away-definately not a tire for snow. Stick with the Dunlop-have had great sucess on my wifes 330xi, the nokian, the gislaved, pirelli or blizzak.
