I got Nokian WR G2 winter tires for my ///M
These are the best performing tires on dry/wet pavement and slush and as good as most dedicated winter tires for snow/ice

Both are european tires and you cant go wrong with either
I personally like Nokian better and it might be a bit easier to find a replacement in case your tire gets damaged

Had the Scorpions - hated them. Now have Blizzak LM-25s - we'll see.

I've run vredestein wintrac 4 extremes in 19" oem size on my X6. Very comfortable, quiet and handled and performed really well In the snow and wet. Good value IMO too.

I'm in a temperate climate NC/SC but still the possibility of cold temperatures and snow/ice (not a whole lot). I don't want to get stuck in the garage and/or on the roads to work. Not sure about dedicated snow tires but looking at the Continental Extreme Contact DWS which has an X6 set up. My brother has used them in DC on his X5 and ML550 and says they were good for him. The reviews look good.

Any comments or experience with the Continentals

Believe it or not, both the WRG2 and the DWS are all season tires with the DWS being better in the dry and the Nokian better in the snow. The DWS would be a great choice and you could ditch the run flats (did you get the spare?).
Guy at work has the DWS on his RX8 year round and he does just fine here in Chicago (replaced his summer set/Dunlop M3 combo)
