This guy did it, has anyone done it on this forum? If so, how was it done and how difficult was it?

You would need an aux video input, the CIC has 3 video inputs if I remember correctly

^^ via coding.

The same way that the cradle for bmw apps sends video, the guys have figured out how to use an RCA video input with an FBAS cable to connect to the CIC. From there, its simple to select that input after you have coded it to active.

The video just shows the iphone being used as a remote for the apple tv, or using the screen as a display via airplay

+1
Audio/Video connection of the AppleTV is the only chalenge everething else is easy. AppleTV has only one output and it is HDMI.
By the way where is RCA input? It has to be on the back of the DVD/CD/Radio unit because there is none on the back of the CIC.

Fbas inputs on the CIC, these are for analogue video. You still need to route the audio through the combox

See this post http://goo.gl/nlBkMZ for the pin outs that go to the combox.

Here is how video from the iphone makes it to the CIC without a media snap in baseplate

The apple TV will use something similar, I'm guessing there is a device that converts digital HDMI to analogue RCA video

Yes there is I guess. Check this video on YouTube there is one converter but I can't find the exact one. There are some converters on ebay but from RCA to HDMI. In our case we need from HDMI to RCA just like the one on this YouTube video.

I can see doing it just for the sake of doing it and probably that short moment of "yay, cool, it works!", but personally I'd just buy a couple of used android tablets with microSD card port and keep them in the car, this would be much more useful. IMHO, of course...

I use an AppleTV at home extensively (have three of them) and would think that what I use it for at home could be pretty cool to be used in the car. The interface to play your audio collection, stream music, watch movies (Netflix etc.) is much MUCH better than what comes from the BMW factory.

Yeah, I guess if you're into Apple "eco system" (did I say it right?), it's worth the effort.

You need to activate it using one of the wert parameters via coding, but yes, assuming its not already occupied.
www.bmw coding.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=379&d=1309738926

remove the space between the bmw and coding, this site tries to block links to their site, I do not know why

I did the mirroring but i think my hdmi to av converter wasn't very good as the signal was showing all the signs of standard analog signal degradation. The device to enable inputs on CiC, Naviks, worked very well but i just couldn't exploit its potential. My plan was to hardwire a Zotac mini pc but the project ultimately fell over.
