It's the nature of a 5000 lb beast. Even my D gets 16 in pure city driving here in SF due to the hills. This week, my wife managed a whopping 13 in the city. In flat city I get 19 as advertised.
I get great numbers on the flip side tho.

We do majority of our driving around town (no commute for either of us, no long trips) and my wife gets about 14mpg around town... That's in full wife mode. She says she gets on it sometimes, but I can't believe it...
I get around 11mpg around town, I typically drive it in sport trans mode, but not M mode...

I decided to restart my MPG gauge and to not drive around in M mode and that made all the difference in the world. I went from 9 mpg to 14.3 mpg. I guess M mode is a little more serious then I had originally thought.

Not sure if you guys use any apps that help you track the gas consumption plus other car related stuff, I've been using GasTracker+ for a long time and it's especially useful for me as I was able to capture everything from day one when I got my car. Give it a try, u'll like it!
Also it's seems to be very accurate!

Mystery solved!! Learn something new every day dont'cha! BTW I'll throw some numbers in.... from my 50i. Normal city driving with moderate fun nets my between 11-12. I took my first long highway trip in a while this weekend. With cruise set to ~74 I just got into the 23 mpg range. Same trip on the return I kept it more like 77mph and got 22.1 or so. I know from prev experience, a long trip avg'ing ~80 netted me 21mpg. Wonder how high I could get if I cruised at 65? Air resistance is a huge factor above 60 mph.

2011 X5 50i - if I keep it at 55, I easily get a sustained 23 mpg. City driving and Interstate speeds of 65-75, with short bursts to 80 occasionally and all the stop and go in city traffic - netting 19.1 mpg each week.

Today in the M, average mpg driving from Winston-Salem to Charlotte:
Wasn't much fun obtaining this number... My usual M mode + sport mode and a heavy foot usually nets around 14.8 Last edited by gixxerboy63; 03-18-2016 at 05:20 PM.. |

M Mode = gas guzzler mode.
What does the M mode do on the X5M in regards to throttle/fuel delivery/power? Thought it just adjusts throttle sensitivity?

That's pretty solid for a +5k lbs. vehicle that can roast a lot of other cars on the road!

The back of the truck/bumper are completely covered in black soot along with my garage wall and whatever is parked directly behind me...mpg have dropped significantly, lots of back firing, loss of power. I'm meeting up with my buddy tomorrow to find out if they(BMW) flashed the truck back to stock which would cause these problems(tune wise) I'll update this as soon as I get some answers |
