The tow hitch is approx. $1200 installed and has electrical plugs for lights on the trailer.

Any trailer over 2,000 lbs will require you to put an e-brake on the X5. This brake will control the brake on heavier trailers.

I have the hitch on my X6. The dealer only installes the hitch/electrical and updates iDrive. They do not install the optional e-brake component which will be required to tow larger trailers.

Do you guys know what happens if you do not reprogram the iDrive?

I have an X5 on order and am going to add a hitch after. I am planning on just ordering the wiring kit (pn# 71600413361) and for the hitch I am planning to get a bolt on hide a hitch.

I was told the reprogramming was a full day of labor... Ouch. So If its just something like the parking sensors not being active in reverse, then I dont care. But if the reprogramming does a lot more, Ill have to rethink my plans.

Any help would be appreciated.

The lights probably won't work on the trailer. Also I noticed on mine that it shuts offf the rear sensors but leaves the camera on. The DSC also knows that you have a trailer and supposedly compensates for the trailer fishtailing on the highway.I did notice that when I disconnected the trailer and wireing my idrive crashed. I might try to shut it off next time before D/C, but in all reality I don't think it should crash.
And yes they kept it overnight due to the reprogram.
