Is the X5 right for me?
Hi all,
I just joined and am looking for advice as to whether the X5 is the next car for me. I own a current model WRX but am looking to go upmarket. I thought seriously about a Golf GTI which I have liked for a long time but never got around to buying. Of the cars that I have owned these are the ones that I am proud of: 1984 Audi Quattro 1984 Peugeot 205 GTi 1987 Toyota MR2 (AW11) 2007 Holden Commodore VE SS 2010 Subaru Impreza WRX But it is time to move on. The GTI was cool but I didn't feel as if I was getting much value-for-money over my WRX even with the current free on-roads that VW are offering. So, I turned to BMW and as our family is just the three of us I initially thought of the 3-series. The 320i just doesn't do it for me but the 320d looks like it might get the blood racing. Then I thought maybe I should look at something with a bit more luxury like the X5. It seems to drive fairly well, taught and upright and loaded with extras. My budget is around the AUD30,000 mark. You guys will probably know best what I should do so I'm open to suggestions. |

I got out of my 06 A4 stage 1 to an X5D and I'm happy! It's been 3 months and I'm just now getting used to driving something so nice and pimp. Performance is almost exact, but I'm gonna chip it soon.

Would you say that the diesel is more torquey than the petrol 6? I'm leaning toward that engine based on price, weight and running costs. In fact I could get a newer X3 model for the same price as an X5 but I know even less about them.

I didn't like the newer X3 at all. The Diesel is tourqey and fun. I drove the gas/ diesel back to back. I personally felt the gas to be a tiny bit more power full on top end, but I'm not regretting my decision. I'm getting a JBD and the MPG of the diesel, well if I drove the gas like I drive my diesel I'd probably be getting 14 MPG and not 22.

Sounds to me like you might want to drive an x6 before you make a final decision. You can get a used one for about 45k US. It would have around 40 to 50,000 miles on it but that us nothing for a BMW.
The only thing I would be cautious on a diesel would be maintenance. The cleaning fluid used when it self cleans needs to be replaced every so often and it can be pricey. Also, once it runs out if warranty do you know a real good mechanic? Diesels are not easy to work on nor understood by most. |
