X5M winter wheel and tire package - pics

Winter is almost here and I have been searching for a suitable wheel/tire combo. I came pretty close to order TSW Nurburgring wheels and tires plus sensors and the total was just shy of 3K and due to the rear hub size hub centric spacers would be required.

I also looked at some OE take-offs from various forums but it would be a pain as most sellers have the summer rubber and I would need to sell the tires or hold them and then buy winter rubber. Also sellers were asking pretty high prices.

At the end of the day I decided on the following:

I'll give you hint what's in the boxes:

Name: 298M wheel.jpg

Size: 8.2 KB

Cost breakdown as follows:

Dunlop Grandtrek tires - used one season - $595. ($1,100 - new) - found local.

BMW OE 298M Wheels - $408 per wheel plus tax

TPMS Sensors from - Tire Rack - $200

All in, approx $2,500 and I feel good that I have OE BMW wheels to clear the monster brakes and the proper off-sets and hub sizes. Cost was decent considering.

Sensors will be here this week and will mount shortly and update pics.

Please let me know if anyone has any questions.

I have those rims too. Actually I think they are nicer than the stock rims. You got a smokin' deal on those. I bough mine from the dealership and got banged dry for $4500 installed.

I would like to get those for my X6M. Before picking her up this spring, I asked a dealer for a winter package and they said little over 3k based on last year's price. Now I have a car and asked for a quote. It costs now over $4k. It's not just my dealer and everywhere is asking for the same. Anyway, may I ask you where you actually purchased your wheels?

getbmwparts.com has the wheels discounted to $408 per wheel x 4 + $75 shipping. Total about $1,700 for wheels. However, my local dealer parts department matched the price. They did not want to lose the biz. MSRP is over $510 per wheel.

DO NOT GET THE WINTER PACKAGE FROM THEM OR THE DEALER, ITS OVER 1K PER WHEEL AS THEY RAPE YOU ON THE TIRES, SENSORS, M&B, ETC.

I was luckly enough to find tires locally in almost new condition for $595.

Sensors were $200 from Tire Rack plus shipping. Total $210.

Just has them installed yesterday. Here are some pics.

Recap as follows:

$1700 for wheels - see above where to get them.
$600 for tires - I got lucky. New tires (non RFT) are about $1,100 from TR.
$200 Sensors - Tire Rack is the lowest price. Dealer wanted over $350.
$140 Mount/Balance/Install TPMS - local Goodyear
_________

$2,640 - Total

Very happy. Wheels fit perfect, OE quality, proper offsets, clear the brakes, etc. Car rides great.
If any questions, I'm happy to answer. PM is cool as well.

Michael

PS - It's 60 degrees today

PPS - I also got the continental flat tire pump and goo from Tire Rack. $79. Just in case as these tires are non RFT.

Quick question, are you feeling completely safe with just the pump and goo? I kinda want to do a complete spare tire just in case I get a flat. Whenever I got a flat was from the tire chains that are on snow plows. And sometimes the tire gets shredded from that.
Setup looks great!!

I have had mixed luck. I frequently get nails in tires and need patches but I have had few truely flat tires needing to install a spare. 5 years with the M5 and no issues, never needed the goo, but I was nearly stranded with RFTs in just 6 months.
A pot hole tore the sidewall. I was able to keep driving but was out of town and probably couldn't have made it back to Charlotte without having found a replacement tire at BMW of Asheville 5 minutes before they closed.

EDIT: Oops, somehow the last sentence got chopped. It should make more sense now....

Yeah, I'm okay with it. I also have a spare from my prior 2011 X5 50i that I took when I sold the car. I have not experimented to see of it fits (might need spacer and/or hub ring) but will. Also, I travel major roads and rarely at night. Being that the winter setup is a 255/50/19 which is a pretty common size I feel okay.
