E70 caliper upgrade

Hi guys, I did reply to a post but I think its a very old one now I have seen the date.

Hope someone can help me if they have carried out this process before.

I have a LCI E70 40d msport and I am looking to upgrade my braking system, I am not looking at the expenses of brembo 4 or 6 pot but rather the x5 50d system which uses a much bigger caliper and discs (40/36/385).

I see this is a very popular upgrade that guys use on the F15 (e70 50d brakes on a x5 f15) but there are reports of coding the sport brake option due to a soft pedal feel?

No as I will be looking to install the e70 50d calipers on a e70 40d has any one done this and reported back of brake pedal feel and if there is option for coding?

Any help much appreciated and also I van create a guide to help others for this..

Regards

Us here on the other side of the pond never got the 50D. That might hinder your help with some of the members here that are US based. Hopefully someone can chime in...

Like NYC said, we didn't get the 50D here. The best non-M brakes in the states will be the LCI 50i has two piston calipers with 365mm rotors. If you want bigger rotors then that, the only choice is to get the M brake upgrade kit for the F15, which ironically is the exact same brakes on the E70 X5M. Its what I did and bolted on without issues on my E70 2012 50i. You can pick the entire kit up for around 2K.

No coding is needed on the E70, only on the F15.

It can be done, but there is no sport brake option to code on the E70. I ran E70 X5M 4 pot brembo calipers on my E70, as long as you bleed the brakes properly, the pedal will be firm.

On the F15, You need to add SBRE retrofit code to get the firm pedal as the pressure required out of the DSC is higher.

I did look at the 50i brake setup but the 50d has bigger disks (385x36) and 60mm piston

I will be doing the same. Now that I know there is a option to do the change.

So I have to buy the F15 M brake package? Not seeing it available.

Yep thats the one
Here a link: https://www.getbmwparts.com/oem-part...it-34112348054

Shop around, I actually got the best price from my dealer when the price matched at 2200 plus got no freight charge so might call your dealer as shipping is a BEAST on this. The box is comes in is massive and on a pallet.

Right the rotors are bigger, the 50i does have dual pistons though even though realoem lists it as a single. Perhaps you could order the caliper brackets from the dealer for a 50d, and pick up a used set of 50i calipers and combo with zimmerman 385 or 395 rotors?

I just installed this kit with OEM 19's. You need 10mm spacers for the 19x10 OEM wheel OW71442 with 53mm offset. The OW71441 is the 19x9 48mm offset.

Did you have to code anything? I read yes and no. Just curious your experience. I bled the system really well- used the ISTA bleed procedure with 5 pumps and also the shade tree pump and dump. Pedal still seems soft but maybe it's just more controllable. I literally have 5 miles on it.

I

Only the F15 needs coding from what I understand. I did the same as you. When you did the ISTA Bleed did a ton of bubble free fluid come out? Also did you use both bleed screws on each of the front calipers?

With only 5miles on it its probably still bedding in too. Get ready for brake dust like you have never seen before. The stock M brake pads are nuts. I switched to performance frictions but they are pretty noisy

Before the ISTA procedure I pump and dumped while using a pressure bleeder and before that I used a stick to keep the master cylinder airless. A decent amount of air came out as I swapped in Goodrich steel brake lines. The pressure bleeder is a must. I did bleed both sides of the fronts.

The brakes are pretty touchy, especially with fast pedal movements. ISPA-P has a sport setting coding option for my car. Unclear what is's all about but I might try it if I'm bored at some point.

The braking is so much better. Do you notice the increased mass on the wheels or am I imagining it?
