Automobile speculates and previews the next generation X5 and X6, which they've labeled as 2014 models and placed their debut of the X5 at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, with the X6 to debut six months later.

So what can we expect for the third generation X5 and second generation X6? According to Automobile's speculation:

TECHNOLOGY

- Both will be based on a new components set known in-house as "X for all." This includes new axles derived from the F10 5-series which will, according to BMW, reduce each SUV's weight by up to 330-pounds.

- The new component set will unfortunately eliminate the X6's torque-vectoring rear differential, an effective but heavy and costly feature. Instead, BMW will offer optional active steering, self-leveling air suspension and Adaptive Drive, which employs adjustable anti-roll bars.

- The 3-way damper calibration system (normal, sport, comfort) and the related engine/transmission control are expected to be included at no cost.

- The new X5/X6 will also see many of BMW's newest and best driver assistance technology - lane departure warning and compensation system, night vision, park assist, traffic sign recognition, surround view cameras, active cruise control, etc.

STYLING

- It's suggested that the 2014 X5 will look the swoopy lines of the current BMW models, which we take to mean that it may have straighter geometric and more classic BMW lines.

- The X6 styling changes will include a rear roofline which allows more headroom and better visibility. Wider rear doors for easier entry and exit. An overall restyling is of course also expected.

- The new interiors will borrow heavily from the 5-series GT's gorgeous interior and will feature glass sunroof, power rear seats, and a multi-use split tailgate.

POWERPLANTS

- Expect M models again of the X5 and X6. The article claims that the models will retain the same S63 4.4L twin turbo V8, but with a power bump and more efficiency.

- Also claimed are two new 4-cylinder options - a 2.0L diesel good for 245hp/260lb-ft torque, and the N20 2.0L gasoline engine (already seen in the current X1 28i) with the same output.

- A plug-in hybrid X5 and X6 are also said to be planned.

- Finally, a 405hp straight six twin-turbo diesel for the 50d version is rumored.

efficiency isn't everything.

I'm all for "efficient dynamics" and such, but I don't think I'd want to drive a 4cylinder x6 no matter how much weight they take off the car. I can't imagine this would ever make it anywhere close to production. Upwards of $70k for a four-cylinder 2-ton SUV? That's a tough sell.

There's a limit to how far they can take the "less is more" concept without diminishing the core appeal of the car.
