Battery type?
Hey guys, I did a search but came up with no definitive answer.
I'm sitting here at home in Montreal while back down in Florida, my 2012 BMW X6 35i Sport is plugged into a Battery Minder model 2012. This charger isn't rated for use on an AGM type battery. It's been plugged in for about 3 weeks so far. I only just realized that there's a possibility that my battery may be an AGM type. I'm terrified that I'm damaging my battery or even worse, possibly setting the car/house on fire. Does anyone know where the heck I can find the specs on the OEM battery? I have the serial # but can't find battery specs, not even the capacity. Thanks in advance for any help at all. A petrified snowbird |

It is an AGM type battery. Should be BMW OE Part # 61-21-7-639-053.

Thanks so much for the answer. Not crazy about the answer, but....
The part number should come in handy as well, seeing as I probably toasted the battery. Dammit!!!!! |

You can get a Deka or an East Penn AGM ( same company) It will still need to be coded.

I'm usually spouting off to anyone who'll listen that it's good to change your battery every 4-5 yrs (especially when living in the snow-belt) so as to avoid taxing the alternator. I guess it's my turn to "put up or shut up".

But for reasons mentioned above, I'll prolly change it out next fall. |

Peter...FYI, I now use a NOCO G1100 picked up for 50 bucks on sale at Crappy T:
http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/no...l#.Vvl284-cHIU I also picked up the quick disconnect charging lead which also has a charge status light: http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/no...l#.Vvl3YI-cHIU Grabbed the NOCO because of the AGM setting, although some batterytender ones, like this one do lead acid, Gel and AGM: http://www.batterytender.com/Charger...fficiency.html ("Perfect for all lead-acid, flooded or sealed maintenance free batteries (AGM and gel cell)). Before the NOCO I used a 1 amp Mastercraft cheapie . Reading more on this issue (can do that when yor semi retired at 52!..make that more retired than semi now at 54)...seems its the higher amp trickle chargers (1.5 amp) are the ones that may cause damage. So if you are .75 to 1.25...then probably fine...The Battery tender brand ones I looked at don't even allow you to select a setting....It's all electrickery to me. Cheers, Fraggins... |

Why do they allow eastern Canadians on this site....?
FYI, I'm 56. I already ordered the Battery Minder 2012 AGM, should be delivered to my buddy down south within a week. I don't trust anything but a Battery Minder due to bad experiences with other maintainers. The same bud down south had his sailboat outboard battery connected to a Battery Tender. We tried starting the boat a year later and couldn't. Turned out that the battery acid had literally hardened, the battery was obviously scrap. Never seen that in my life... The Battery Minder cost me $100 USD. Comes with an ambient temp sensor, quick-connectors to permanently install on the battery and quick-connector clamp connectors for on-the-spot charging. |
