Question about iPhone USB Connection

When connecting the iPhone to the 2012 BMW X6 equipped with 6NR (BMW Apps) via the white Apple USB cable, does it also charge the iPhone? I though it did but the information on the BMW Accessories page for the BMW iPhone Charging Cable states:

Allows charging for Apple iPhone and iTouch models while that device is connected through the vehicles USB/Audio interface. A must when streaming internet music which tends to deplete the iPhone’s battery fairly quickly. Tested and approved for automotive application. Fits conveniently in the center console storage compartment.
Applicable to vehicles with the USB/Audio interface (6FL). Some cars produced from 9/2010 will not be equipped with an audio Y-cable. The white Apple cable may be used on these vehicles for connectivity, but this cable will still not charge the device properly. Therefore, the charging cable is applicable to these vehicles as well.
