You can certainly, but it must be a virgin VIN specific key from the dealer. You cannot simply purchase a used key on ebay and match it to your car. You can have up to ten active fobs for your car. It becomes slightly more complicated if you have comfort access, as only two of those ten fobs may be active with the CA system at any time. This can be changed via BMW ISTA software by disabling unused key transponder slots in the programming.

*disclaimer: There are transponder programmers that can rewrite a transponder key for a different BMW but they cost thousands of dollars and only 1 out of 100 specialist locksmiths might have the equipment and experience. So for most of us, we are limited to purchasing spare keys from the dealer.

I think the one I purchased was new, never used. Product Specification:

Transponder Chip: PCF7945 chip

Electronics/Battery:Yes
Material: ABS & Metal
Color: Black

Frequency:868mhz

FCC ID: KR55WK49127 KR55WK49123

I will see when I take it to the dealer to program and cut the blank key.

The dealers don't program random new keys for your car. They order them specifically for your car pre-cut and matching one of the 10 pre-programmed keys in your ECUs. If you bought something other, you will need a locksmith that has BMW key capabilities.

You'll likely be wasting your time. Franchised BMW dealerships don't cut keys on site, nor will they "program" a key sourced from random places like eBay. The ONLY thing a BMW dealership will do for you regarding replacement keys is to order one from Germany specific to your VIN. It will come with the matching transponder and the key blade will already be cut.

There is no "programming" to do with a new genuine BMW key. Since they come with the matching transponder number already, all you do is insert the new key and go. It doesn't need to be programmed.
