X5m windshield replacement & cost

So, today a large stone impacted the windshield of the X. Fortunately, there was no damage.
It did cause me to inquire with my insurance company of my deductible for glass replacement.

Also, to check prices for parts & labor to replace with heads up display.

total of parts...1329.00

Labor ... 1100.00

These are dealership prices for both parts and labor.

Just something to think about... This is not a toyota pick up glass we have here.

I just had it happen to me last Friday on my way from work, Fornately for me I had glass coverage (no deductible ). Insurance company set up an appointment with one of their vendors to replace the glass, I believe they source the job from safelite. I ask the vendor if they will use OEM glass? They said no but aftermarket, I told them I will only accept OEM glass so they ordered it from the dealer and they just called me 30 mins ago that they got and the insurance approved it so no deductible.

They coming on Saturday so will keep you posted.

Heard that if it is a vehicle with HUD it requires special glass from BMW so maybe that is why soo $$?

Yes, that is exactly why. the HUD windshield is unique, and as far as I know, a BMW part only.

I also have HUD reason I told the rep that I will not accept an aftermarket glass, even though she assured me that she run my VIN and its good for my car.

In regards to who does the job, I think going with a company like safelite is not a bad idea cos most dealerships outsource their glass work anyway. A company like safelite will have more experience with glass work than the dealership I would assume .

I had to replace my after only 1 month on my f15. I went witht he dealer because if anything goes wrong with the install, I know that will get a free loaner and I don't have to worry about anything that might go wrong with the install if done at my house.

In my case a local glass company did the install at the dealership without any issues.

One thing though, on the f15 the wipers are slightly hidden and there was an issue with the wipers hitting the middle part of the hood which was corrected.

Exactly... most dealership outsource their glass work and a company like safelite gives you lifetime warranty so I don't foresee any issues given that they ordered the glass from the dealership.

The insurance companies just like dealing with their vendors than the dealership because of their most of the time outrageous labor cost.

Quick update.

So I had the glass replaced today by the glass vendor my insurance company recommended, work was pretty easy (30 mins tops and it looks good) dude been doing it for 10 plus years.

After the job he sent my receipt via email and it was thank you and be good. I got inside to review the part # on the receipt with getbmwparts.com, and I see bmw got two types of windshield for x5 with HUD..... # 51317211910 which is the glass with HUD and w/o climate control and # 5131211911 which is glass with HUD with climate control and my car got climate control ($400 price difference and guess which one they ordered.

I don't know if it's a big deal or not but I'm surely calling them and the insurance on Monday company cos its gonna be work done 0, I pay $300 a month for premium coverage for this reason.

... and now you have to have it removed it and re-installed again. Unless the installation company used BMW authorized adhesive, the removal may be difficult. If any old adhesive residue remains behind and isn't cleaned properly, the windshield installation may be compromised. This is not easy with the temperatures outside being in the 40"s these days.

Make sure these use BMW adhesive p/n 83-19-2-223-666.

Also, double check that the windshield brand is a Saint Gobain Sekurit with a BMW roundel logo ...

Thanks PAX5 with the insight. I called my dealership and they gave me the same part # the glass company used, I told the guy that I have climate control but he said with my VIN that was the glass for my car so I'm a lil confused. Will do lil more research unless I do not have climate control .

I'd be very surprised that you have Climate Control. I haven't seen any X5M in North America that has that option (358 Climate Comfort windscreen).

It's only in other parts of the world according to my research

If it's different from option (S4NBA ), I think you might be on to something here cos I checked and the glass is from BMW.

thanks for the insight.

Yes it's different from 4NB

Here's the windscreen
http://www.bmw.com/com/en/insights/t...indscreen.html
Quote:
Green stripe climate comfort windscreen helps keep the cabin at a comfortable temperature by reducing the effects of direct and indirect sunlight.

The climate comfort windscreen uses a layer of special reflective material to reflect certain wavelengths of sunlight: infrared radiation, which is responsible for increasing temperature, is not allowed to enter the cabin, while a high level of natural light is able to pass through it.
This reflective technology delivers a heat saving in the cabin of 10 ° C even in direct sunlight. Your air conditioning system can work more efficiently, and your enjoy a light-filled cabin with a comfortable atmosphere.
The green stripe situated at the upper edge of the windscreen prevents the sun from shining directly onto the driver's face, but as it does not impair your field of vision, you still have a perfect view of the traffic ahead
And here's the four zone climate control
http://www.bmw.co.za/products/automo...equip_int5.asp

Quote:
Four-zone climate control for the
BMW X5 M.
The optional four-zone automatic air conditioning system allows the driver, front- and rear-seat passengers to set their own individual temperature, air volume and distribution to match their personal wishes and preferences. Rear-seat passengers can also separately control the electrical heater in the rear footwells.

Got you, thanks for the heads up. Now I gotta call em about my rain sensor, Rainy Monday morning drive to work activated the rain sensor but it did not work. I still got the 3M tape on the car to help secure the glass, could it be it?

Will take em off on my ride home to see if it works, hopefully it's still raining .
