Engine fault - reduce power
So this morning, like every other day of the week, I started my X6M and immediately "Engine fault, please drive with reduced power" message appeared. At that point engine was running fine, just as normal as ever. I then shut it off, waited for a minute or so and then re-started it. Fault message was cleared and car drove normally, no further issues noticed, like nothing ever happened. I have three questions: 1.) Is this something to start worrying about and trying to resolve or should I wait until I see this again? 2.) Has anyone else experienced the same and 3.) What could this possibly be related to? Thank you in advance for your replies on this one ...

could be anything, everything, or nothing. I would have dealer or someone with a scanner search for a code. If no code don't sweat it. If there is a code you will be guided accordingly. If there is no code, but it starts doing it periodically, then you should be shopping for an extended warranty.
These vehicles are like computers. Sometimes they just hiccup, and you need to hit control, alt, delete and restart it.

Your high pressure fuel pump is on the fritz (one of them). Get it in - because it will become a permanent issue at some point.

Thank you for the feedback, Doug. This happened only once so far. If I see it at least one more time, I will definitely look into the high-pressure fuel pump. I think that X6M had two of those

INPA read fault code P0306 - Engine misfire detected - cylinder 6
Had all fuel injectors and spark plugs replaced less than 10K miles ago. Not sure what else could cause this error.
Possible causes - Faulty spark plug 6 - Clogged or faulty fuel injector 6 - Faulty ignition coil 6 - Fuel injector 6 harness is open or shorted - Fuel injector 6 circuit poor electrical connection - Ignition coil 6 harness is open or shorted - Ignition coil 6 circuit poor electrical connection - Insufficient cylinder 6 compression - Incorrect fuel pressure - Intake air leak http://engine-codes.com/p0306_bmw.html http://repairpal.com/OBD-II-Code-P0306 Last edited by igorbmwx6; 06-15-2014 at 02:28 PM.. |

I had the same message appear at 90,000 miles on my 2010 X6M with an extended warranty. Here was the solution:
1. Replace all fuel injectors 2. Replace fuel pump 3. Replace turbo cooler 4. Replace spark plugs Thankfully I was out of pocket only on the spark plugs. Get it serviced quickly. Mine was out of commission for a full week as they had to order the injectors from Deutschland. Good luck... BEST VEHICLE EVER!!!!! Can't wait to order my 2015 X6M! J |

it says: P0306 misfire on cylinder #6. Try to swap the ignition coils from #6 to #5 and viceversa. The access to them on Bank 2 is easy (just remove the top cover)
Cylinder is on bank 2: Passenger / Driver Bank 1 / Bank 2 #4 / #8 #3 / #7 #2 / #6 X #1 / #5 Front if the error code is different and says misfire on cylinder #5, then it is the faulty ignition coil and replace with a new one..... if not, would be the injector or spark plug. |

Hi, I was made aware of a safety recall on the X6 caused by the Engine Malfunction that could stall your vehicle while on the road. See my previous post as I have been having several issues with my X6 as well.

Switched coils #5 and #6 around. Will see if fault comes back and if it will now be for cylinder #5 instead of #6. This should identify if the problem is with coil, spark plug or a fuel injector

Ended up being one of the coils. However, once I swapped them around, issue never returned. Now 10k miles later, still no problems. Must have been a glitch or maybe bad connection on one of the coils. Re-seating it did the trick.

I just got the same engine fault warning and reduced power. It was the high pressure fuel pumps (both). They are changing them out along with all injectors per the bulletin. Mechanic wants plugs replaced but have me pay (I'm under warranty but plugs not included). I argued plugs aren't due to be replaced yet and if they need to be as ancillary damage to warranty issue, BMW should cover it. They agreed only to replace ones that are fouled for free and I can pay for the others. Fair enough as I was going to replace them anyway. I'm at 51k miles. First real issue with car.

X6M 2012 on fire after Fuel injectors Replacement. Engine Fault Light, reduced power.
I just had the worst experience with my 2012 X6M, my car was set on fire, after fuel injectors replacement, done at a dealership.
Since new, i experienced problems with engine light, power loss and engine entering safe mode. after thousands spent in replacements, some covered by warranty and some not, they said a campaign was open for my car and i should go for a fuel injectors replacement. 30 days of parts waiting time and my car finally was ready for a test drive. A phone call at the end of the day saying that my car was totaled by fire ended this story. has been more than 70 days and BMW Brasil is incapable of giving me a feedback. next wed is my final deadline to receive a feedback, after this, no other way if not moving a lawsuit against the dealership and BMW Brasil.Has anyone gone trough this experience ?? |
