New X5 owners
When did you do your first OIL change (how many miles)? Did you do after the engine (gasoline or diesel) break in period or just as regular interval at 10-12K miles.
Help the new guys here.. What are the benefits in doing the OIL change after the break in period. |

Well I'm leasing mine so I waited for the indicator to tell me. Actually I ended up going in with 3K showing because it had been a year. This is my 3rd BMW and over a decade I can say they've pretty much been bullet proof. Now if someone can tell me how to program the garage door opener.....

I did mine at 1200 miles after breaking it in. That's been ingrained in me since I was young. I don't believe it when the dealer tells me these engines come broken in lol

I did mine at about 11 months, however, I plan on doing it much more often (5000 miles) even if it costs me,,,I believe in frequent oil changes,,,,especially with a turbo engine!

These engines "self clean". See the black stuff dripping from your left tail pipe? Thats your oil blowing through the turbo and burning up in the exhaust manifold. Thats why you have to add a quart or two between oil changes.

I plan on taking mine in at 1200 miles, just like I did with my 135i, I'll probably get the dinan tune done at the same time. Then it'll get changed every 5-6k after that.

I would do the first at 5,000-7,500 miles, then every 7,500 after that. These newer engines with synthetic oil out of the factory takes longer to break in. There's just not enough friction to smooth things out quickly, so there might be an adverse effect if you change it too early.
I did notice a significant mpg and acceleration change at the 2,000 miles mark. |

I think it's crazy they would tell u it's normal for oil to leak out the turbos into the exhaust... that's not normal |

And I didn't do the math but 1 quart every 750mi means u would burn all ur oil off between scheduled maintenance. 7500mi = 10qts and the scheduled oil change I believe is 15000mi right? That 20qts of oil u would burn!!
And if oil is dripping out of the exhaust it means it didn't burn off. It would come out as smoke if it did. It's flowing through intact. No bueno. Unless its not oil and I just condensation turned black from the smoot in the exhaust. |

Im going to take a pic or two and post it for you guys to see. It drips off the tailpipe and onto the plastic of the bumper where it dries and cakes up until I wash the car. All cars have water, or condensation coming out of the exhaust. My car has an opaque black gook.
The one quart per 750 miles sounds ridiculous to me too. I burned a quart in 8,000 miles. Car is going to the dealer on Thursday... the rear heat controls do not work at all. Its one thing after another with this truck. I'm ready to get BMW involved and start making noise for a new vehicle. |

Hmmm, this is the first I've heard of this and my service advisor hasn't mentioned anything like this. Since they make money by offering services it would seem that they'd offer up this. I don't do a monthly oil check, but I do perform one on a quarterly basis. After 12000 miles it never indicated that I needed to add. And my service advisor told me that I wasn't low when they changed it out. It would seem if this is true it should be highlighted much more.

WHAT...."oil blowing through and burning up in the exhaust",,,,two things,,,if you have oil coming out of your exhaust you DO have problems,,second I think what you see is condensation/carbon mixed together, not oil,,,,,if it is oil see #1!!!!!
