Air compressor pump sound

For the first time I heard an air compressor sound from the engine bay after I shut the car off yesterday.

Sounded like a compressor was running and then a relief valve noise. Reminded me of the air compressor in my old range rover, as far as I know there is no air suspension in the X5M. What's the air compressor for?

i think the rear has air suspension because it is self leveling. not entirely sure though

Is the rear self leveling on all cars or just with 3rd row? Mine sounds like the rear would be self leveling, just like the LR3 did.

I believe its only with 3rd row seats.

I have the 35i sport with adaptive drive. I get that sound when I unlock the car after it has been sitting for a while. I do not have the 3rd row seat.

Interesting, I had an E70 35i Premium and now driving an E70 35i Sport. I don't have air suspension, nor am I aware of such option.

If you don't have air suspension, that noise could be a couple things: High Pressure Fuel Pump relieving pressure/priming or water/oil pump circulating fluids to cool off your turbos after you shut off.
