X5M Periodic Ticking Sound When Car is off, is It the Alarm?
New to BMW, have owned my 2010 X5M for 4 months now... Still trying to get used to the peculiarities of owning a German car.
So when the car is off, I am hearing a ticking sound coming from the car. Is this normal BMW thing? Could it be the sound of the alarm system? It's definitely not coming from the engine as this sound continues after turning off the engine no matter if the engine was hot or cold. |

Again, since the forum experts are AWOL, here is my .02 cents...
Firstly, you are probably aware that your "German" car is made in Spartanburg. So you can expect (unfortunately) quirks and issues to arise...(Flame suit on)
2nd, I have never heard of an alarm system that "ticks" so cross this one out. 3rd, the cooling fan and circulation pump to cool down the turbos continues to operate for a few minutes after switching off the engine, this is normal operation. As long as you are running OK with no CEL, I wouldn't worry about it too much... Hope this helps and welcome to the club.

MHKM, thanks for the input. Its definitely NOT from the engine area. Its coming from the rear area of the car, when I get close or walk by the car I hear two clicking noises... Are the X5M's equipped with motion sensors? I'll have to record the sound...
It's probably nothing to worry about, no CEL. |

You're quite welcome
The final thing which comes to my mind would be the gas cap... this is known to make clicking sounds to equilibrate pressure...

Mine does this too--it's definitely some type of mechanical cycling coming from something inside in the back corner of the vehicle--mechanical relay or something similar. I'll try to record sometime.
I don't have the self-leveling option (or 3rd row seat), so I know it's not related to that. |

The sound is neither from the engine area nor the gas cap/lock are, sound is from below the rear end of the car, a constant double-tick/click sound that I'm assuming is from the alarm system or some other electric relay...
Not a big deal as it is not causing a CEL or any other warning, was just curious what the heck it could be... |

Not sure I've heard a ticking sound, but my X5 makes all sorts of different sounds/hisses/grunts when it's not running. None are loud, they only last a second or two, and they're quite infrequent. No idea what they are but I kinda chuckle at them to be honest - I think is this vehicle is possessed or something

So, I just got all 8 injectors and spark plugs replaced due to the dreaded engine malfunction error....
As an added benefit, the ticking noise that I mentioned went away too. Wonder if they updated the cars software or something. |
