X_5_Manual_Transmission

Could somebody explain how the Steptronics transmission work with manual transmission? Do you down shift and up shift like an actual manual transmission but without a clutch? For example if you are on 4th gears and approaching a signal light you would down shift to first gear or just put it in neutral than shift to first gear?

Thanks for in advance.

X5 has a completely automatic transmission with a semi-manual mode. You can up-shift and down-shift as you'd like, but it won't let you do anything that will harm the drive train or stall the engine. If you are in M4 and come to a stop, the transmission will automatically put you back in 1st gear. Down-shifting through every gear is not necessary and will probably only increase wear on the transmission.

Thanks for the respond. So if driving at the speed 60 mph on the hwy and hit traffics the manual transmission would automatically switch gears for you. Thanks again for your lesson on this. My X5 is currently waiting to be ship to the dealer where I purchase it.
