Shutter and Check Engine While Accelerating

So this AM on the way to work, my 2008 X5 (3.0 70k miles) would shutter when pressing on the accelerator and would hardly accelerate. Check engine light came one. While pulled over and in park, RPM's would go up and down 1k. Shut it off and restarted, acted like nothing happened and ran just fine the rest of the way to work.

About 4 months ago it would hesitate during aggressive acceleration, but then after a can of Seafoam was fine. Not sure if related.

Thinking may need to replace spark plugs/coils. Though odd that a "reboot" would fix a mechanical issue. Any other thoughts?

Thanks!

Sounds like plugs & coils. I'd pull the fault and see what comes up

Need to pull the fault codes, if you only have the obdIi codes, post them up, but ideally the stored BMW codes using a diagnostic tool or software. It could be the Vanos solenoids. So far with my N52, the diagnostic software has pointed me directly to the cause of any problems.
