Low Engine Oil

The low engine oil warning has come on and is asking for a quart.

I've read some threads that say that it is normal to consume a high amount of oil during break-in of BMW's. But my 2009 X6 50i has over 10,000 miles on it. One thread said it happens normally. The manual says it depends on how you drive.

Whaddya think?

Do I just go to the dealer and buy a quart of the same oil and dump it in? Isn't there a risk of overfilling? Perhaps add 1/2-2/3 to start and see?

Anyone else had this happen? Never since my 1978 Ford Fairmont in college...

If its asking for a quart you should be safe adding a quart. My E46 used to ask for a quart every few thousand miles almost on schedule. I started to keep one in the trunk at all times.

You should be OK with any of these.

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market:

* BMW High Performance SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Oil* (BMW part number 07 51 0 017 866)

* Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30

* Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40

* Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30

* Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

Use only oils with an API rating of SM or higher.

I just had to put a quart in mine at about 5k. I went to a local dealer and they added a quart. No appointment needed - pretty easy actually.

I always have a qt of Mobil one 0w40 synthetic in my car. I have had to add 2 qts over the last 13k miles. Why do you guys go to the dealer to put a qt of oil in your car? Are you that afraid to put oil in your car?

Thanks for the feedback guys. Dealer confirmed "normal". High output engines, plus Dinan stage 1 as well...

Dealer puts it in for free and gave me a qt for the road. I will put in myself from now on unless I am near dealer.
